2. INTRODUCTION to
biotechonology
● Used in agriculture, food production,
medicine, environment
● Composed mainly of microbiology and
biology
● The term have been conied by Károly Ereky
an Hungarian engineer.
4. MICROBIOLOGY
● Alice Catherine Evans
● Born: January 29, 1881 Neath, Pennsylvania
● Died: September 5, 1975 (aged 94) Alexandria, Virginia
5. ALICE CATHERINE EVANS
● Alice became a researcher at the US Department of
Agriculture, where she investigated bacteriology in milk and
cheese.
● She joined in the United States Public Health Services in
1918, where she contributed to the field of infectious illness.
● She's known for demostraiting that bacilius abortus caused
Brucellosis
7. REBECCA LANCEFIELD
● She was educated in Columbia University where she received
her Ph.D. There she became professor of microbiology.
● Rebecca was the second woman to become president of the
Society of american Bacteriologists
● She's known for her serological classification of beta-hemolytic
streptococcal bacteria which is based on the carbohydrate
composition of bacterial antigens found on their cell walls.
8. MICROBIOLOGY and BIOLOGY
● Lynn Margulis
● Born: March 5, 1938 Chicago Illinois, U.S
● Died: Nevember 22, 2011 (aged 73) Amherst,
Massachusetts, U.S
9. Lynn Margulis
● Best known for her scientific theory on the origin of complex
cells.
● At the age of 19 she obtained a bachelor degree from the
University of Chicago. After three years she graduated with
master's degree in genetics and zoology.
● In 1965 she received her PhD, next year she joined the faculty
tof Boston University.
● Margulis became Distinguished Professor of Botany anf
Geosciences.
● She worked with some Spanish universities and has maked
evolutionary microbiology jobs in Delta Ebro.
10. Lynn Margulis
● Ignored for a decade, her theory that cell organelles were
once independent became widely accepted after it was
substantiated by genetic avidences.
● Mrs. Margulis received the National Medal Science in 1999
by president William J. Clinton.
● She has been awarded in about twenty times, and she's
published tens of books and journals
