    Your idea to create a container on the Rural Design and Entrepreneurial School is great and important. Through internet much information is available, but that is not the same as relevant knowledge. Developing a self-generating method is beyond the actual main stream.
    I would like to share my experience with creating such a container, back in the eighties.
    The theoretical basis for the process was: manipulative display. At that time it meant something like: a set of instructions for actions, that would guide people through a process, for instance of decision making, of brainstorming, of collaborating.
    The theoretical basis for the content was our understanding of the way traffic systems in and around urban districts work.
    Background: I worked with citizen’s groups on a problems with traffic safety. Too many people (and children!) died or got hurt in their neighbourhoods. Many groups of citizens were asking for support, and we had too little time to support all groups. Instead of a ‘life’ consultant, we did send a box.
    We created a ‘traffic box’, a container with all kinds of instructions on how to collaborate in dealing with traffic problems in your district.
    The box contained (if I remember well):
    - a manual how to use the contents;
    - two sets of coloured cards: problems and causes;
    - a few pages with headers, like People present on the meeting; Important phone numbers and addresses; Location, Problems and Causes; To do and Who list;
    - markers and pens;
    - coloured stickers for prioritising;
    - a manual on dealing with local government;
    - clothes pins and traffic liquorice.
    The manual told the people how to prepare a gathering, what kind of things one should do on beforehand, and what one could do with all the things that were brought up in the meetings.
    We were concerned about the way such gatherings could develop itself, so we created instructions about how to involve all people and all experience that could be available.
    Someone had to find a map of the area.
    Than the meeting could start with every one pinpointing on the map where he or she lived, and how they had come to the venue. That would ensure that everyone was acknowledged as present and part of the meeting!
    The next step was to distribute the first set of cards over the map. That set of cards indicated possible traffic problems (too much traffic to cross the road, severe accidents, too much noise, . . . .).
    All participants were to put some cards on the map. Than someone had to mark the location and put that mark on the cards.
    The next thing to do was to prioritise the problems: where should our attention at first go to. People were to add coloured stickers to the locations where the cards had been put.
    The cards for the other locations were kept together with the clothespins.
    Then, for the prioritised locations, one could display the cards. The problem-cards related to the second set of cards: causes.
    The card “we cannot cross the street” could relate to cards with something like: too much traffic, too fast driving, the street is too wide, it is impossible to see what is happening.
    People had to discuss what the cause or were the causes of the problem on that spot. The second set of cards would be distributed over the map.
    The markers were needed again to link the answers to the locations. The clothespins could hold the cards together.
    The pages with the header Location, Problems and Causes were to be used to collect the data.
    They could be used to send to the municipality: this is going on here, you need to deal with it, ASOP!
    So, in a few steps people would have gathered all the insights they had on the situations, in a way
    It had more detail than I remember now. Anyhow, it worked. Quite a few of these boxes were distributed through the country, and people were working with. We had positive feedback.
    The clue was:
    - a lot of colour and liquorice
    - a strong structure
    - a strong theoretical framework
    We can make something like that for the Rural Design and Entrepreneurial School!

  • Hi Ville, I think it is a great idea although the practical design raises questions of course. I can offer you to act as a thinking partner if you would wish so. Why is it we don't speak and reflect more often?
