This paper points out the limitation of Canonical Action Research (CAR) during the adoption process of social media by microbusinesses. CAR is found rigid since it does not permit to iterate within its stages. A CAR project is used to demonstrate the need for such flexibility. Pragmatism leads to a trial-and-error problem solving approach defying the fixed stages of a cycle. Rigidity issue with CAR is observed in the literature leading to development of Action Design Research (ADR) model. ADR has two problems: (a) consulting orientation with no philosophical standpoint, focused on development of IT artefact; and (b) definition of IT artefact. ADR treats IT artefact as technology as structure restricting its use in other views of technology. This paper proposes a versatile CAR with elements of design research to be used in volatile, diminished theory driven situation wherein the primary focus is theoretical development arising from solving problems of the participants.

Environmental and economic evidence is increasingly supporting the need for better analytical tools for evaluating the recovery of consumer products. In response, we present a novel mathematical model for determining what we call the Optimal Recovery Plan (ORP) for any given product. The ORP is based on an evaluation and optimization of the economics of remanufacturing consumer products versus demanufacturing in the context of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation, a driving force behind the adoption remanufacturing initiatives by firms. We provide an illustrative application of the model and then discuss its implications for scholars and practitioners concerned with sustainable business development.

ABSTRACT Studies dealing with environmental issues in product development have made significant progress explaining how firms can develop greener products that succeed on the market. Intriguingly, although a large number of tools and methods have been developed that supposedly help firms develop greener products, it is less common to draw on established theories on product innovation. This may explain why firms that have tried to develop more sustainable products have had mixed experiences. Environmental new product development (ENPD) and new product development (NPD) literature is reviewed to develop a model that helps explain the complexity of greening and the challenges product development teams face in their attempts to incorporate environmental issues into product development. This paper emphasizes that scholars need to incorporate environmental issues into established theories on NPD. Adapting existing theoretical models may help practitioners in their struggle to integrate the E into NPD. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and ERP Environment.

The engineering profession is similar to medicine and law in that engineers are required to assimilate a large quantity of specialized knowledge that they then apply to the solution of specific problems. The application of knowledge is often bound by an extensive set of standards and practices that specify \"accepted methods and norms\". You will note that creative individuals are those that \"think outside the box\" or violate accepted norms of the field in order to bring a creative solution into being (e.g. Einstein\'s theory of relativity). They are often described as \"mavericks\". Thus, you might think that creativity and engineering are in some sense incompatible. Yet, when we look at innovative firms in complex industries, engineers are in the forefront of achieving creative solutions that drive innovation. In fact, they are necessary in many industries since modern business requires extensive technical knowledge to drive new solutions. How can this seeming paradox be explained? What factors separate the engineer who applies existing solutions to problems from the engineer who pioneers creative solutions? In your opinion, is it individual differences or can the difference be explained by organizational or environmental characteristics? Solution 1) As the asked question is based on the engineering students. 2) it is quiet different from any other branches because this is the only field that a student must think individually. 3) Not only individualy but also innovatively in many ways that can be applied. 4) And the most important thing in thid field is that learning of applications in theory and applying them in practical. 5) In many ways a student can make his subject more intersting by understading what he was learning. 6) The only subject that a student can easily understand and apply his thoughts to it. 7) In the pressent scenario engineering studies are more helpful in this fast running world. 8) You will note that creative individuals are those that \"think outside the box\" or violate accepted norms of the field in order to bring a creative solution into being (e.g. Einstein\'s theory of relativity). 9) The application of knowledge is often bound by an extensive set of standards and practices that specify \"accepted methods and norms\" 10) Generally, Science is the study of the physical world, while Engineering applies scientific knowledge to design processes, structures or equipment. 11) Both Engineers and Scientists will have a strong knowledge of science, mathematics and technology, but Engineering students will learn to apply these principles to designing creative solutions to Engineering challenges. 12) Engineering is a design process, combining knowledge of the properties of materials, models that predict how these behave, and innovative thinking, to create often-novel solutions to human needs. 13) In contrast, it may be helpful to think of technology as the process of making things, using tools, materials, and process skill.

Powerful forces, including demographics, globalization, and rapidly evolving technologies are driving profound changes in engineering professionals in our society. The changing workforce and technology needs of a global knowledge-driven economy are dramatically changing the nature of engineering practices and education, demanding far broader skills than simply the mastery of scientific and technological disciplines. Over the last decades, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and regional state colleges have joined forces with many major research universities to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship as critical to their mission and role in their communities. The leaderships at HBCUs recognize the importance of innovation, commercialization, entrepreneurship, and the creation of economic value for their communities, especially for these institutions with land-grant missions. University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is a land-grant institution with 270 years rich history and legacy. Today, UMES has been reclassified as a Carnegie Doctoral Research (Moderate) University by the Carnegie Foundation and is on its request to become a pioneering HBCU in promoting innovation, commercialization and entrepreneurship for academic eminence. The Engineering, Business, and Technology programs at the School of Business and Technology at UMES play critical roles in advancing this new mission. To achieve this, we at the School of Business and Technology have developed roadmaps and strategies in four perspectives: We promote student innovation and entrepreneurship; we encourage faculty innovation and entrepreneurship; we actively foster collaboration in university and industry, and we engage with regional and local economic development efforts. In this seminar talk, I will elaborate on the efforts and initiatives we have developed with the goal of translating creativity on campus into business opportunity.
