I found this project online and created a powerpoint to provide step by step instructions for my students. This project is not my own and is an online project (I do not have the details for the original site but am giving credit to that source indirectly :) )

### How to shade a sphere and floating spheres project step by step instructions

1. 1. How to Shade a Sphere Mrs. Comstock
2. 2. What is a sphere???O A sphere is a circle that has been shaded so it looks like a three dimensional object and NOT just a flat circle.
4. 4. When drawing a sphere, you need to consider your light source. Which side is the light coming from?
5. 5. O The light is coming from the LEFT. This puts the highlight on the left of the ball, and casts a shadow to the right.
6. 6. OThe light source can come from OTHER directions too, whichCHANGES which side the shadow falls.
7. 7. In this picture, which side is the lightcoming from? Where is thehighlight?
8. 8. Theshadow isalways on the oppositeside of thehighlight!
9. 9. Before we get started, let’s talk about shading. When youshade there is a rightway and a wrong way!
10. 10. Wrong Way:
11. 11. Right Way:
12. 12. STEP 1:O Draw a circle.
13. 13. We are going to pretend the light is coming from the LEFT.Step 2. Add a curved line to the right side ofthe circle.Fill in the crescent moon shapedark.
14. 14. Step 3. Draw another light curved line, smaller this time like the hole inan olive. Leaving left side white, shadefrom dark to light in the middle shape. This shows the HIGHLIGHT! Wherethe light is directly hitting!
15. 15. Step 4. To add a shadow, make an ovalstarting at center of bottom of the sphere.Fill in dark. Remember, the shadow is on the opposite side of the highlight!
16. 16. Now that wehave learnedhow to drawspheres, let’s start ourproject called FLOATING SPHERES!
17. 17. Well start with a small square (probably 5" X 5"), make a vanishing pointand then extendwavy (or straight)sections outward to color.
18. 18. Next well make some spheres using pencil and crayon. You can make the shadows if it helps you, but we are going to cut them out without the shadows so you will be cutting the shadows off if you do.
19. 19. Well cut them out and gluethem on our initial square.
20. 20. Next place your squarerandomly on your larger paper andextend a fewof your black rays and change theblack ray to a color ray.
21. 21. AWESOME WORK! VOILA! You are finished! You learned how to draw a shaded sphere, draw lines from a one point perspective, and how to make floating spheres!
