- Sustainable development and the changing climate are interconnected. You can’t succeed on one without addressing the other. Whether it concerns energy, food security, water, cities or consumption patterns, all the sustainable development goals are linked to the ability to tackle the effects of the changing climate. The Sustainable Development Goals are a principle declaration to halt climate change, but they lack a clear plan on how the burden of this change should be shared by the global community. - The teaching notes provide questions to guide reading and analysis of each chapter, with links to news articles and other resources for current context, extended reading and online activities. The Guarding Eden website also has a news page updated daily with relevant articles from many different news sources. The book also has value as an English text, providing a way to increase the focus on climate change within the restraints of the Australian and school curriculum. As an alternative to reading the whole book cover to cover, single chapters could be allocated to students for individual projects. -Sue Dwyer is a Melbourne writer and teacher. She currently teaches at Footscray City College and has been working with her year 9 media class on a global climate change project called Weather Stations with the Wheeler Centre and Tipping Point Australia.
- CRED's research focuses on disasters and complex emergencies that have, or had, a major impact on human health. This includes a range of natural disasters (such as earthquakes, floods, storms, heatwaves and droughts) and man-made disasters (such as civil war or strife). CRED also conducts in-depth research on the implications of humanitarian crises in the fields of human rights and humanitarian law, socio-economic and environmental issues, early warning systems, mental health care and the specific needs of women and children.
