Everyone is telling the public sector they need to publish open data and they really ought to be publishing linked open data. But what’s in it for them? Potentially a lot, but ONLY IF PEOPLE USE IT. Publishing it is only half of the answer. Let’s try to understand better what people want to use the data for, how they would like to access it, what they would like to combine it with.
A lot of data gets to end users via applications. That software is created by developers. Supporting the development of useful applications is in many ways a social openness issue, as discussed by Ton Zijlstra in his part of the talk. Data publishers need to actively engage with the developer community.
