Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Permanent Senior Project Manager working on major projects such as the London 2012
Olympics, after gaining the project as the LOCOG Gap cabling Manager,
I was involved in the original Bid management team’s dealings with LOCOG,
enabling me to create a detailed project plan and Project Manage all aspects of the
design and installation, of all venues and off park sites, which started with a 1.6m
order from LOCOG.
In addition I had to Manage, a team of 120 full time engineers copper and Fibre,
cabling specialists.
Establish relationships and manage expectations of stake holders and venue
management.
During this time I was responsible for all 167 sites and venues, quoting, planning
and installing the Timing and scoring cabling for OMEGA, and all scoreboard
cabling fibre and copper for Panasonic, all OFCOM cabling fibre and copper, in
addition any cabling that was not being covered by BT such as all Audio cabling,
and all other Capture technology cabling and equipment requirements for all
functional areas and provide within budget solutions.
Also cabling both Copper and Fibre for the outside broadcast team,
Work with international service providers such as BT, Omega Panasonic, OFCOM,
and various audio companies’.
Produce detailed network designs including containment, cable routes and fibre
patch cabinets. Perform consolidation exercises to reduce expenditure while
protecting user requirements
Review and update architectural technology drawings (CADs).
Produce detailed cabling schedule prioritising key areas and taking into
consideration all Venue User Agreements.
Schedule and oversee the installation of all technology Cabling and ensure
accuracy as per the venue design, Plan and manage the post-competition removal
of all installed cabling.
During this time I was responsible for the ordering equipment and arranging for
resource for all sites, also acting as the Health and Safety manager for all the
installation’s producing site specific RAMS also resolving all issues, in a timely
manner to allow the successful completion of the games.
3. Integration Manager
Working with several Hotels chains including, acting as Site Integration Manager/
Senior project Manager on the new Corinthia 6 Star Hotel in Whitehall London, my
responsibilities included managing the 1.3m P&L for the initial contract including all
communication installations, within the new build, such as Planning installation and
design of the CCTV, security system, Alarm System, PBX system, Wireless LAN
installation, planning and completing the Data network and Comms rooms Builds
including electrical, structural and cabling installation, this also included several
Satellite dishes and the terrestrial aerial, implementing delivery processes to ensure
the Corinthia Hotel was delivered in time and within budget, this includes the overall
system installation and integration, in addition installing the Bose sound system
and several other systems site wide, additional areas such as the new Spar, Gym
and residential Apartments, were all connected back to the main comms room and
systems, making them compatible with the Main Hotel
Another Hotel delivered at this time covered the running of BAU and new
installations was the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Royal suite

Contractor CIS Trouble Shooter Business advisor, assisting with several projects,
working on Presales from bid management through product planning and execution
through to delivery and signoff
Within this role my responsibilities included assisting with Presales and identify
opportunities for product innovation and product enhancements, also Maintain a full
understanding of market conditions and customer needs at the same time assisting
the Project Managers with Bid Management, Planning and Integration with this
gaining customer confidence and in some cases regaining customer conference.

Contractor CIS Principle responsibilities, were managing various installation projects. From
Presales, Project Governance, RFP, Bid management, PID completion,
Implementation, Planning, change and Risk Management, through to conclusion
and signoff.
This required me to assist the customers in developing new networking systems; on
a UK wide basis. During this time I completed projects as a senior Customer
Project manager for companies such as JANET(UK), NHS, and local Government.
The projects involved the installation of Fibre and copper links, CCTV traffic
management systems, WiMax installations, Network equipment for hospitals, local
Government buildings, schools, Colleges, small and large companies across the
UK, these included Network rail camera installation, ICT Infrastructure to Greenfield
sites. WAN./LAN / CCTV/ Mobile Networks and Active Directory PABX, PBX and
VOIP systems. In addition Health and Safety, moves and changes, Billing, method
statements, risk assessments and design changes, were included.
