Seldom do Teachers Become Lifelong Learners by Accident
1. Life is 10% what happens to you and
90% how you react to it.

6. Maxims of a Personal Learning Network
1. A personal learning network (PLN) is a collection of ideational,
material, and human actors that are a cause and/or consequence
of one’s knowledge base, skill sets, and overall disposition.
2. An actor is any node within one’s PLN that has the potential to
change and/or cause another actor to change.
3. A PLN never remains constant: it or parts of it are either growing
or withering… and it never starts from nothing.
4. Understanding (metacognitively) one’s PLN can occur at one point
in time and over time.
5. What usually is meant as “personalized learning” is simply
understanding one’s PLN… (professional) learning is
understanding one’s PLN!
7.
8. How does a PLN contribute to an
(English) language teacher’s
professional development learning?
10. Teacher competence is “a complex combination of knowledge, skills, understanding, values, attitudes
and desire which lead to effective, embodied human action in the world, in a particular domain” (Crick,
2008 as cited in European Commission…, 2013, p. 9).
