3. RESEARCH
There are 3 different types of music video, these been; performance video - these
are vdeos with a performance from the artists within, this makes the audience focus
soley on the preformance. A lot of alternative rock style bands/artists use this kind of
video. There is also a narrative video - this type of video looks more like a short film
then any other video, ssome times there will be a small lip sinc but it always relates to
the lyrics rather well. Then there is the concept video – this type is based more on the
artists creative ideas. This is very diffferent to the other types becase usually has no
story line or relation to the song, there might be some small relationsbut hard to
understand and get and normaly is theme based.
A music video is to create and show a message to the audience and to entertain, the
main purpose of a music video is to promote and get more sales for the artist,
primarly only one video promotes one track.
Andrew Goodwin - % main parts to a music video;
1.Thought through beat, seeing the meaning in your head.
2.Relation ship between both the song and visuals(video).
3.Narrative and preformance of the song.
4.Technical aspects of the video.
5.Star image/center of attention(photagonist).
4. PERFORMANCE
EXAMPLESIn the ‘mr brightside’ video from the killers, you
can quite clearly see they are preforming on a
stage for an audience, this is a preformance
video.
5. NARRATIVE EXAMPLES
In this video from Taylor swift, she sins to her self in
mirrors and things and more is like telling a story to the
listeners and making more sence with the song.
6. CONCEPT EXAMPLES
In this ellie Goulding video ‘ dead in the water’ you
can clearly tell from this screen shot that it doesn’t
relate that much, there is water but nothing is dead
showing this as a concept video, there is some
means to relativity but not till later stages in the
video.
7. POTENTIAL SONGS
Juice wrld – lucid dream
The looks - naïve
Hozier – take me to church
One republic – counting stars
Blackbear - if
Rudimental – waiting all night
8. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
Wide range of camera shots and movements, e.g. close ups,
moving shots, stills ect.
Lighting , shadowing , colour grades, cinematic feels.
Lots of post production ad edits , e.g. glitches, sat frames ,slow
motion.
Probably wont use any animations because I feel it doesn’t suit
the genre of music I am going to do.
I will be cutting to the beat and adding effects in, where I do
not know yet but I know I want a glitchy kind of 3d colour thing
go on during some clips to the beat.
9. POTENTIAL
CONVENTIONS
mis en sen – isolation , lonley streets
Camera shots, close ups, long shots , wide shots
Movements- slow , sluggish , sad
Costume- dark or maybe a night out after math so dress heals
Colour- dark washed out, lonley colours
Location- night time city early morning
Lighting – natural light or light source found in the cities
10. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in previous
sessions. Explore how you could interpret the song differently
using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images, mind
maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bbl.'s to generate these
11. MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
Ideas of idfc-blackbear;
1. Dark room with only lips/mouth showing for lip syncing the chorus parts, fast
camera switches but slow video footage, night time empty streets thinking 4-
7am in a city. Glitchy footage like 3d without glasses effect but not on all,
subject walking round bare foot shoes in hands dress on female , night out and
male lip sync.
1. Again with the dark room this time a projector with weird lights over face,
changes so different part of the face shows could change gender if cut to the
beat and filmed right. Night time city but more of a cinimatic look at the street
life at night and architecture, mad edits and post production needed to make
look super trippy.
1. slow motion montage subject walking down a road, cut o the beat maybe on a
roof, then different road, keep changing scene tell sunrise at the beach, glitchy
vibe, no lip sync more of a concept video.
13. IDEA GEN
IDFC – blackbear
Location- Empty streets, towns , roads to show isolation – ‘out all
night’- after math of a night out – relates to the lyrics rather well.
Camera edit – slow motion , cinimatic feel of lass walking round
,after math – lip sinc , projector on lips only to create an artistic feel to
the lips.- could even show parts of face at different points- colours .
Dark looks with soe bright looks, dark vibe gives us the lost feeling
wonerding round the streets with shaky camera or swaying to create
the drunk affect.
Preformance – lip sinc, dark room – then switch to girl walking round
empty town (theme after night out, after math) shoes in hand, dressed
up, crying ,walking round , sun rise – lip sinc only some verses
Feelings- lost, sad, down, drunk, mistakes been made, upset
14. IDEA GEN
IDFC – blackbear
Location- Empty streets, towns , roads to show isolation – ‘out all
night’- after math of a night out – car shots
Camera edit – film a low car, stance video, lost of fast frames and
slow motion shots, close ups, cinematic
Performance – car driving at night, empty streets , slowly , not relate
to the song, rich colors and style
Feelings- love for the car
15. FINAL IDEA –

Pharrell Williams, Miley Cyrus, Linkin Park, Tiny Meat Gang, and Jacob Sartorius.
Genre info – american wrap/electric music, people also search for ‘r&b soul’ after listening
to idfc.
16. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content, duration, pace and style of the
song]
IDFC – Blackbear
Meaning- judging by the lyrics, the singer is too scared to be single and on their own, so
they are pretty much letting their partner walk all over them for the sake of not being alone.
He says he has “Hella feelings” but he's also scared.
Duration- 4:10
Pace/style- r&b soul/future base, both fast paced and slow paced, lots of electronic
sounds and quite a sad but futuristic sound to it.
Content- The title “idfc” is an abbreviation for “ I don’t fucking care”, black bear in the lyrics
explains that letting someone walk all over him and lie is better then being alone, this
shows hes lonley or scared to be alone.
17. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your interpretation, use of imagery or
narrative, genre conventions, etc]
Lip sync the main parts of the song(chorus) with maybe a projector only showing the mouth on
one bit then the beat changes and it goes to a cinimatic feel video, a lot of this will be filmed at
night in a city or maybe more im still trying to decide, some parts will be an 18-20 year old girl
walking round in a dress and heals in her hand, showing the after math of a night out..
Lots of different camera shots and movements will be done, creating real fast frames but with
slow motion clips like a b role sequence but more relatable to the lyrics.
When the beat drops and goes verry future I want to make a trippy feel and have the camera go
all twisted and reflected ad buildings go into buildings, will be very abstract and coordinated with
the beat so will be quite fast going from roof tops to the ground and lots more.
The lip sync will be filmed in room with no windows, this idea could change, but I want only the
lips showing on a male character and it to still be dark, I could use a fill light behind to create god
contrast and shadows and I want it to be smokey to create a lonley siloets feel to it.
This will all go well with my genre type because of the trippy electric vibe and the sadness in the
singers voice, It will relate to the song well and create a moving video.
Lots of post production, 3d color effect, glitchy movements ect.
19. My production-
My production is going to be on the song “idfc” by blackbear released in 2015. This song
fits into the genres; electric music, r&b soul, and future base creating a wide audience for
the song and video I will produce.
My music video will relate to the lyrics quite well as there will be small preformance of lip
syncs in it, the other parts of the song ill be covered with cinematic frames in time with the
beat flowing well to create an alternative story to the song. I plan on using a male
character to do the lip sync so it sounds and looks realastic, then the subject for most the
ther parts will not only be a female but aloud of empty streets creating the lonley isolated
feel to it.
The video will get the audience to really feel the power behind the song and create a
relationship between song and listener/watcher, I will do this by using a rather simplistic
video with quite a lot of post production targeting people my age within the genres of
music. I plan on showing the isolation of the song and the negative mood it has on people.
The whole tone of the song is quite moody and down, Ill show this in the video by filming
at night and try to film in the rain as this just shows the moody sadness of the world. The
beat does change in parts of the song where its slow and ad to fast and upbeat like club
music, on the fast beats ill crate a montage of fast frame video clips showing the streets or
rain or subject, the frames will switch fast but will e played in slow motion creating a real
cinimatic feel to the entire video.
The whole structure of my video will be to the tune of the song, every change of frame or
clip will be with the beat and flow smoothly. ill be adding a colour grade to make the lights
look abit more blue and colder,
20. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, e.g. distance, access, cost, weather? How will
you manage this?
The limits is the cost of fuel and deciding where to film, this is a big part of the video as it’s
the main part, also the weather as I would like It to be raining in te video so its waiting for
that to happen and it might not so I will just have to film it without the rain which isn’t a big
issue, access isn’t to bad as it will be a city but im hoping we have the streets and roads to
our selfs when filming.
Most definitely we will film in either York ,hull or Leeds, and then ill create the dark room I
need at my house. I will also be filming most of this when its dark so evening or early
hours of the morning, it will probably be 5am-7am so then the streets and roads are pretty
quite showing loneliness and isolation.
21. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly from college, but who do
you need to speak to get this kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
So I will be using my own camera, Sony a7ii with the 28-70 f4 lens, although the lens isn't
amazing in low light, the camera has built in stabilization making my shots smooth, I also
have tripods and a videoing handle too.
I will also be using mine or my friends car to get some of the shots and maybe a few small
props like mirrors, lights, water spray etc.
The lip sync will be filmed in a dark room, for this I have two standing lights with dimmers,
ill create something to create a shadow over most the face and will but a black back drop
around the subject, for the smoke affect I will use an electric cigarette just to give it more
of a misty vibe.
22. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other specialist facilities…?
I will be editing my video at college but filming out side of college, I can create the room I
need my self, and for the rest I will use models I have used for my photography too do the
video with me, I will be filming mostly out doors early morning so im in no need for any
type of facilities besides editing.
23. PERSONNEL
Crew- ill be using friends and family to make this video idea possible, they are free most
weekends as am I so think ill be able to shoot every thing I need in 2 days if its raining.
Ill have a male lip (sync) singer/ maybe more then one not sure
Female subject for the other prats of walking through the streets
Maybe a low car with good stance that looks nice at night
Ill be handling the videoing my self but with the lip sync ill be getting my mates to help set
up and create the smoke and things as I feel that’s going to be hard to get to look right.
24. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
Props - I will use some led lights that is a neon colour to create
some light against a glass window.
Costume- the woman walking will be in a quite nice dress with
heals in her hand, earrings and dolled up make up like she's
been n a night out, the male act will be mostly in dark cloths
with maybe some expensive looking Jewry on.
26. COLOUR / LIGHTING.I will be making the colour of my music video
more darker but the subject a little more blue
to show the coldness and isolation between
the two people in the video, lights will have
more of a blue and pink tint and be more
warmer but kind of neon night themed.
The walking scene of the girl in different
locations will be filmed like b role, showing
different aspects of whats going on in slow
motion but with many frames to the beat, the
lighting for this will be mostly natural except
from some where I will source neon lights
from the streets and I can also use some of
my own neon light props.
The lip sync will be in a dark room with a bit
of smoke and a fill light behind or to the side
of the head, seeing the movement of lips but
no full identity or clear picture with light on
the face till the end of the video.
27. LOCATIONI will film mostly out doors in the early hours of
the morning in the streets of York town, it will
be early in the morning because that’s when it
will still be quite dark and the streets will be
empty, creating a more lonley walk and set a
better mood of them scenes of the video.
The first picture is from a tunnel near york trait
station where I am going to film and the
second is just the streets in town center, the
irregular look and close narrow streets will
emphasize isolation with only one way to go
and one subject going.
The dark room for the lip sync I am going to
set up in my house, I have back drops sands
and lights I can use the create the look I want,
this creates a dark mood/feel to the song and
will fit real well with it all.
28. EFFECTS
These two effects are what im going to use
when u hear the tune sound like all electric
and things, small glitches through out and
colours popping out and I think it will really
fit in with the genre of music, this artist twist
will make the music video more eye
catching for the audience as it almost
seems real but then unreal at the same
time.
When I do these type of effects the colours
wont be as bright and will be de-saturated
quite abit to still fit into the dark theme within
my video making it all flow nicely and fit
together.

Tell me pretty lies
Look me in the face
Tell me that you love me
Even if it's fake
'Cause I don't fucking care, at all
You've been out all night
I don't know where you've been
You're slurring all your words
Not making any sense
But I don't fucking care, at all
'Cause I have hella feelings for you
I act like I don't fucking care
Like they ain't even there
'Cause I have hella feelings for you
I act like I don't fucking care
'Cause I'm so fucking scared
I'm only a fool for you
And maybe you're too good for me
I'm only a fool for you
But I don't fucking care, at all, oh
Tell me pretty lies
Look me in the face
Tell me that you love me
Even if it's fake
'Cause I don't fucking care, at all
You've been out all night
I don't know where you've been
You're slurring all your words
Not making any sense
But I don't fucking care, at all
'Cause I have hella feelings for you
I act like I don't fucking care
Like they ain't even there
'Cause I have hella feelings for you
I act like I don't fucking care
'Cause I'm so fucking scared
I'm only a fool for you
And maybe you're too good for me
I'm only a fool for you
But I don't fucking care, at all, oh
36. PRE CHORUS
Tell me pretty lies, look me
in the face
Tell me that you love me,
even if it's fake
'Cause I don't fucking care
at all
You been out all night, I
don't know where you been
You're slurring all your
words, not making any
sense
But I don't fucking care at all
For this starting shot ill be filming a
small b role like montage of items
within the room where te singer is,
for example I will start with a close
up with the chair leg and move up ,
on the beat it will switch to the other
side and on the back of the chair,
the chair will be empty, then the
smoke will start and as soon as the
beat goes and lyrics role the male
character will be within a head shot,
but the contrast will be high and not
much clarity in the image apart from
lips and teeth. Ill be using manual
focus a lot within this to create blur
outs and in.
37. CHORUS
'Cause I have
hella feelings
for you
I act like I don't
fucking care
Like they ain't
even there
'Cause I have
hella feelings
for you
I act like I don't
fucking care
'Cause I'm so
fucking scared
This will carry on from the shots I was doing
before but where it goes ‘cause I have hella
feelings for you’ there will be a small glimps of a
female character flicking the hair back slow
motion like hes remebering soemthing she did.
This will be shot over the shoulder.
For the rest of the chorus there will be more lip
syncing and camera angles/shots in the room
of him singing and items around, him holding
this, lighting a lighter, smoke bomb ect, all slow
motion but many clips and frames.
38. POST CHORUS
I'm only a fool for you
And maybe you're too
good for me
I'm only a fool for you
But I don't fucking care at
all
1:35 first beat drop
thing2:02 finish back to pre
chorus
Close up of singers eyes and a tear drop
come out and fall, beat to a light turn on
behind him, cmera tracks the singer
standing up and his arm movements with
the light behind creating a shadowed front,
beat drops and camera goes fast into palm
switches to woman.
39. BEAT DROP 1
On the beat the camera will glitch to a female walking down
the street with no one else in sight (medium shot) moving with
her, shell be in a dress and holding her heels in her hands,
everything will look cold and dark and are a very sad lonley
feel to it.
Lots of different angles will be used and many items found in
streets will be filmed cinematically and in post a lot of work will
be done to create abstract turns and camera location changes,
there will be a few glitchy 4d effects put in to make it seem like
it isn’t reality and make it fit more with the style of music.
40. PRE CHORUSTell me pretty lies, look
me in the face
Tell me that you love
me, even if it's fake
'Cause I don't fucking
care at all
You been out all night, I
don't know where you
been
You slurring all your
words, not making any
sense
But I don't fucking care
at all
In this part of the song there will
be more lip sync and movements
in the camera, with dark glitchy
parts on the beats as there will be
through out the song and video.
many frames will be of the singer
but on some beats to create
interest ill show the female and
shots of her making the subject of
the song clear.
41. CHORUS'Cause I have
hella feelings for
you
I act like I don't
fucking care
Like they ain't
even there
'Cause I have
hella feelings for
you
I act like I don't
fucking care
'Cause I'm so
fucking scared
for the last chorus i will refer
back to the first few shots i
used for lip sync, and have the
girl in some parts of it as well
using 3d effects and glitches.
42. POST CHORUS / FINAL
BEAT DROP, AND END
I'm only a fool for you
And maybe you're too good
for me
I'm only a fool for you
But I don't fucking care at
all, oh
3:25 last beat
drop3:52 end, slow
beat
In the final scene there will be a lot of
street views changing to the beat, as
the music fades out it will show the
man with her heels walking away
from the camera, blurring and fading.
43. RIP-O-MATIC
This is a super rough concept idea
for my video made from clips out of
other music videos that inspired me
and a few b role sequences I have
seen, you get the general lip sync
room idea and the transitions and
edits, obviously instead of a single
guy stood on a bridge there will be
my idea of a girl walking and will
more be focused on her to show the
meaning rather then objects in a city
45. PRODUCTION GROUP

Include names, contact info, and defined roles at difference
stages of production, using a table is suggested

47. locations
I will film mostly the cinematic scenes in york town around
6am sunrise, hope fully it is a little raining or has been
raining to get the wet look everywhere creating a sad mood
for the watchers, I will be filming early in the morning so the
streets and roads are quite and it gives he video the
isolation it needs to relate to the lyrics.
The singer will be in a dark room, with maybe a back light
and specific shadow created minimizing the identity of the
singer, im doing this because I want the video to be abstract
and different but still relate to the song clearly. The dark
room will be at my house.
