Reliability Extremely reliable Reliability is reduced by interference Highly reliable
from various sources and types of
construction.

Mobility Limited Very Good Good
6. What is Broadband over Powerline?
A technology that transforms the standard electric power
grid into a communications route to carry broadband
telecommunications along its entire length and to every
utility device on the grid and to every consumer outlet.
The broadband signal is
“injected” into the powerlines at strategic points, most often the
utility substation
“regenerated” along the grid route to assure good signal quality
“extracted” from the powerlines at any point to provide
communication services through specialized, low cost modems
7. BPL Concept

9. Internet ready building
Making multi tenant unit (MTU) ready for high-
speed broadband services using IP with the
entire required
infrastructure, network, operation, and service
function.
Internet service has become the next utility
after electricity, telephone, water and gas.
10. In Building Broadband Access –
Technology Options
Technology Strengths Weaknesses
Wi-Fi Widespread No Video
Dead spot
Interference (no QoS/QoE)
Wired (FO or UTP) Well known Need new wiring system
Coax (EOC, MoCA, TV Location Not available everywhere
HPNA)
Powerline (and Powerline over Coax)are the only
In-Home distribution technologies suitable for all
Applications
11. Benefits
Triple play (Data, Voice, Video) capability for users
Low cost installation
Plug-it, simple installation
Time to revenue for building owner
Increase building value
Central manageability
High scalability
Creating reliable, secure users access to Broadband
beyond wireless hot spots ingress and intermediate RF
outage
17. BPL Equipment
Master or Repeater CPE/Modem
