ML development brings many new complexities beyond the traditional software development lifecycle. Unlike in traditional software development, ML developers want to try multiple algorithms, tools and parameters to get the best results, and they need to track this information to reproduce work. In addition, developers need to use many distinct systems to productionize models. To address these problems, many companies are building custom “ML platforms” that automate this lifecycle, but even these platforms are limited to a few supported algorithms and to each company’s internal infrastructure. In this talk, I present MLflow, a new open source project from Databricks that aims to design an open ML platform where organizations can use any ML library and development tool of their choice to reliably build and share ML applications. MLflow introduces simple abstractions to package reproducible projects, track results, and encapsulate models that can be used with many existing tools, accelerating the ML lifecycle for organizations of any size.

In this deck I describe twenty best practices for using external DSLs to develop software (also know as Model-Driven Development). The best practices are based on my personal experience, but they are also rated based on feedback I received from a number of colleagues to express the level of confidence experts have in the particular best practice. The slides cover three main aspects: language definition, model processing as well as process and organizational issues. Examples include the importance of notations, viewpoints and partitioning, the role of constraints, model transformations and testing as well as some thoughts on documentation, reviews and project roles. Putting twenty best practices into 5.000 words of course results in each best practice being quite brief. However, it also means each is highly condensed and to the point. I believe the slides remind developers of most of the critical aspects of using DSLs, and it can serve as a checklist when starting an MD* project.

Richard Tibbetts, CTO, StreamBase Systems. StreamSQL EventFlow is one of the most popular languages for Complex Event Processing (CEP), a data management paradigm for real-time applications. Based on a stream-relational data model common to other CEP languages, EventFlow is unique in that it is a visual language. This talk will focus on the design of visual representations for key features including event dispatch, modularity, data parallelism, polymorphism, and dependency injection, and on the co-development of an Eclipse-based IDE along with a new programming language. StreamSQL EventFlow is the primary programming language for the StreamBase Event Processing Platform. Complex Event Processing platforms are used to process large volumes of event-oriented data in real-time, often in latency-critical applications such as securities trading. Combining clustering, messaging, queuing, data storage, and application logic into one system minimizes latency and gives the programmer control over all aspects of the application. StreamSQL EventFlow is an executable visual language for building CEP applications, unlike visual environments designed for non-developers, or architecture-focused modeling tools. The talk will cover experiences overcoming prejudice against visual programming languages, and how critical development tools are to that process. We will also discuss some details of the implementation including the compiler, a visual debugger, and diff/merge functionality.
