  3. 3. So how do we know our emergency backup electrical power system is reliable? The Facilities Department conducts MONTHLY testing of each generator for at least 30 minutes under a test load. In addition, Facilities conducts a “super test” once every three years, for an extended period of time, to be sure our back up plans and equipment are fully capable.
  4. 4. Utilities required to continue our day-to-day activities at the Hospital are listed below: <ul><li>Electrical power </li></ul><ul><li>Hot and cold water </li></ul><ul><li>Medical gases (oxygen, medical air, vacuum, nitrous oxide, etc.) </li></ul><ul><li>Sewer systems </li></ul><ul><li>Steam </li></ul><ul><li>Heating, ventilation, air conditioning </li></ul><ul><li>Telephones </li></ul><ul><li>Paging </li></ul><ul><li>Computers </li></ul><ul><li>Nurse call systems </li></ul><ul><li>Elevators </li></ul>
  5. 5. UTILITY SYSTEMS FAILURE RESPONSE A Code Yellow may be announced if the outage is extensive enough. Do you know what to do in the event of a Code Yellow in your area? Review your department’s plan with your manager!
  6. 6. RESPONDING TO UTILITY FAILURES <ul><li>Electrical power failure: </li></ul><ul><li>Contact Facility Services. </li></ul><ul><li>Check that all life-support, critical equipment is connected to the red outlets. </li></ul><ul><li>Use flashlights. </li></ul><ul><li>Manually regulate parenteral, epidural, and enteral pumps. </li></ul><ul><li>Postpone new surgical/invasive procedures. </li></ul><ul><li>Use extra precautions in isolation rooms. </li></ul>Computer systems failure - Contact Information Systems and use the backup paper documentation system.
