Education is compulsory and free for all
children aged between 6 and 16 years, and
is supported by the national government
together with the governments of each of
the country's 17 Autonomous
Communities.

into 3 categories:
-State schools
-Privately run schools funded by
the State (religious or laic)
-Purely private schools The school states:
-Kindergarten

-University
4. NURSERY SCHOOL ,which takes children from around three
months up to three years old, but it is not covered by the
state.
PRESCHOOL ,which take children from three to six years old.
Preschools are often attached to state primary schools and are
free.
6. COMPULSORY SECONDARY
EDUCATION

standards they will be awarded a Graduate of Secondary Education

Secondary education is divided into two cycles:
• from 12 to 14 years and
• from 14 to 16.
In both cycles, there are core compulsory subjects and
optional subjects.
7. At 16, students can choose to study for :
the Baccalaureate (bachillerato),
intermediate vocational training or
will be geared towards a specific job,
leave education completely.

10. In Spain the SCHOOL YEAR generally starts in mid-
September and runs through to mid-June. There are three
terms of roughly 11 weeks.
11. There are usually two weeks of holiday over Christmas,
two weeks over Easter and a long summer holiday of
around 10–11 weeks.
12. The Key Competences for Lifelong Learning in
the Spanish Education System have their origin in the
key competences, established by the European Union
at the end of 1990s.
13. The Spanish law of education established which
competences were relevant. They are eight:
1. Communication in the mother tongue and at least
in one foreign language.
2. Mathematical competence.
3. Competence in science and technology.
4. Digital competence (ICT)
5. Learning to learn.
6. Social and civic competence,
7. Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship.
8. Cultural awareness and expression.
14. Nowadays we are using pedagogical techniques as the
use of technology in the classroom in order to
increase student interaction and involvement.
Normally our students work in groups of 2-3 on
activities so they practice collaborating with peers and
also help each other to construct new knowledge.
In the future we want to implement the use of tablets
in the classroom.
15. I hope you have enjoyed and have learnt something
useful about The Spanish Education System.
