Born 1972
Chin is a reknowned spoken
word poet and LGBTQ
activist.
Her popular one-woman shows
include:"Hands Afire,"
"Unspeakable Things" and
"Border/Clash."
5. Zora Howard
Howard is a Harlem-raised writer, spoken
word artist, actress, and activist.
She was a member of the 2006 Urban Word
NYC Slam Team which placed second at
the Brave New Voices Youth National
Slam.

6. Aja Monet
Monet received a BA from Sarah
Lawrence College and an MFA in
Creative Writing from the School of
the Art Institute of Chicago. She
independently published her first
book of poetry, The Black Unicorn
Sings, and collaborated with
poet/musician Saul Williams on the
book Chorus: a literary mixtape. Her
first CD, Scared To Make
Love/Scared Not To, is a testament to
her creative lens and a social
commentary on the discussion of
love.

7. jessica Care moore
Born 1971
Founder and CEO of Moore
Black Press, the Detroit native
first won acclaim as the first
poet to ever win the nationally
televised “Showtime at the
Apollo” 5 times in a row. In
that same year, she was
featured in SlamNation which
followed her and the 1996
Nuyorican Poetry Slam Team.

8. Sunni Patterson
An advocate of Holistic Health and Healing,
Patterson is dedicated to the growth and
evolution of humanity. She deliberately
uses art as a tool to recognize, address,
and eliminate all forms of oppression.
Before touring and lecturing full time, this
graduate of Tuskegee University taught
as a full time High School teacher in the
New Orleans Public Schools and as an
instructor at Kuumba Academy African
Centered School.

9. Rha Goddess
Rha Goddess is a hip-
hop artist and
playwright who
coined the term
"floetry” to
describe her blend
of rhythm, poetry,
hip-hop and
politics. She
independently
released her solo
album, Soulah Vibe,
in 2000.
10. Liza Jessie Peterson
Liza began her poetry career at
the famed Nuyorican Poets
Café in 1995 as part of the
“Underground Slam
Poetry/Spoken Word”
movement before it attracted
national obsession. She
assembled Ghetto
Orchestra, a band of
musicians who complimented
her poetry and monologues.
She has written eight plays
and was a recipient of a 2003
New York Foundation for The
Arts (NYFA) grant for her one
woman play “The Peculiar
Patriot.”
