Through a highly personalized and learning-centered approach Dillard's students are able to meet the competitive demands of a diverse, global and technologically advanced society.<br />ADVISING MISSION STATEMENTThe mission of advising is to use a teaching and learning approach that empowers students as they clarify and realize their goals through both curricular and co-curricular engagement. <br />GOALS OF FACULTY ADVISING AT DILLARD UNIVERSITY<br />Through assessment and evaluation, the following aspects of Advising will be monitored and the data will be used to improve programs, policies and procedures.<br />80% of students will complete their schedule during the early registration process;<br />Provide students with quarterly newsletters containing information that facilitates their decision-making process;<br />Provide monthly professional development opportunities that bolster the capacity of faculty advising to effectively and efficiently advise students;<br />80% of students will indicate “Satisfied” or “Very Satisfied” on the Advising Survey in regards to their advising experience.<br />80% of students will indicate “Agree” or “Strongly Agree” on the Advising Survey when asked to describe their advisor’s interpersonal and communication skills.<br />STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES<br />As a result of participating in certain activities related to student-centered advising, students will be able to:<br />complete the full early registration cycle as evidenced by a confirmed schedule;<br />utilize CampusWeb to select courses and track their academic progress;<br />confirm/revisit academic major/choices based on self-appraisal of one’s interests, skills, goals and academic performance;<br />demonstrate awareness of and willingness to participate both curricular and co-curricular resources designed to enhance one’s academic experience and preparation to realize post-baccalaureate goals;<br />independently conduct career exploration activities that include summer research, service learning and volunteer opportunities in the major; and<br />DISABILITY STATEMENT<br />If any student feels that he/she has a disability and needs special accommodations, please notify the instructor of such disability and the desired accommodations immediately. Be prepared to provide needed documentation.<br />DISASTER PREPAREDNESS STATEMENT<br />“In the event of disaster, the Dillard University Preparedness Plan will take priority over the timeline in the syllabus. The summary of key points for the plan is available on the University website and by printed literature.” In case of an evacuation, this course will still be offered and be automatically switched to an on line Bb course four days after evacuation. It is the responsibility of the student to have access to a computer as soon as possible, to monitor Bb (htt://dillard.blackboard.com), and send an email with updated contact information.<br />STUDENTS’ RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES<br />The student has the RIGHT to expect:<br />his/her advisor to thoroughly understand the university’s structure and its academic policies on such things as registration, add/drop, withdrawal, payment options, and academic grievances. <br />his/her advisor will be familiar with the variety of degree offerings, the procedure for referral to and the types of support services available. <br />his/her advisor to help plan a program of study, designed through personal interaction between the student and the advisor, which reflects the student’s academic background, course prerequisites, and educational goals. <br />the advisor to create an atmosphere of openness, caring and concern so meaningful communication and trust can occur. <br />It is the student’s RESPONSIBILITY to: <br />Actively participate in all advising appointments by asking questions, offering comments, etc.<br />Take the initiative to contact and get to know their faculty advisor, learn his/her location and contact information early in the first semester, and help your faculty advisor get to know you. Be mindful of the need to work with your faculty advisor during posted office hours or make other arrangements in advance. <br />Schedule well in advance and arrive for the advising appointment on time with a current copy of your unofficial transcript, a copy of your program of study and any other official documents. It is also your responsibility to cancel the appointment with the advisor in a respectable timeframe, if possible. Contact your academic division and Dr. Morelon-Quainoo if your advisor is chronically absent from scheduled appointments or posted office hours. <br />Consult with the advisor on a regular basis, when in academic difficulty, prior to changing majors, prior to making changes in an approved schedule, transferring to another college, or withdrawing from college. <br />Notify your faculty advisor immediately whenever a serious problem (medical, financial, personal) disrupts your ability to attend classes or interferes with your ability to focus on your education and to perform your best work. <br />Prepare for meetings with your faculty advisor by gathering relevant decision-making information, creating a list of questions and drafting a course schedule (if the meeting is focused on course selection for the coming semester). <br />keep a personal record of your progress towards your degree. Organize official college documents (program of study with completed courses marked out, unofficial transcripts, degree audits, etc.) and bring them with you to advising meetings. <br />Be familiar with the requirements of your major and minor and to schedule courses each semester in accordance with those requirements. <br />Follow Dillard University policies and procedures when registering for courses and making adjustments to your class schedule. <br />Observe academic deadlines by knowing when to register and when to drop or add classes.
