Rodrigo Duterte was elected president of the Philippines in large part due to his popularity and success as mayor of Davao City for over 22 years. As mayor, he vowed to clean up the crime-ridden city and today Davao has the lowest crime rate in the country. Duterte appointed himself as "judge, jury and executioner" and gained the support of 88% of Davao residents in a recent poll. Videos from Davao residents and E&G teachers in Davao express pride and support for Duterte and their expectation that he will make the Philippines as safe as he made Davao. The newsletter provides information on Duterte's election and upcoming academic events at E&G.

Why Filipinos chose former Davao's mayor,
Rodrigo Duterte as their next president?
The Philippines’ presidential election has received international media attention in large part because of the outspoken,
occasionally outlandish remarks of its victor, Rodrigo Duterte.
Major newspapers and television stations worldwide have been issuing the stories about him everyday, so it's not that difficult to
understand factors which can explain his victory in the Philippines.
2. Here is one article on TIME magazine, which features why Philippines just elected Rodrio Duterte as their new
leader(http://time.com/4328326/rodrigo-duertes-philippines-five-facts/).
The article said, "Duterte served as mayor of Davao City for more than 22 years. Trained as a lawyer, he vowed to clean up
a city so notorious for its crime it was once tagged the “Nicaragua of Asia.” Today, Davao’s per capita crime rate is the
lowest in the country. (Omitted) Duterte appointed himself judge, jury and executioner—and the people of Davao loved him
for it. In a March survey conducted in the city by Ateneo de Davao University, 88 percent of people polled said they would
vote for Duterte as president."
Why did people of Davao overwhelmingly support their former Mayor? Let's watch the video of the messages to Rodrigo
Duterte from his people of Davao below and find the answers!
