I will start with Plan A which has received a major update since it’s launch in 2007 . 3 years on and we are making a very clear statement of intent…..
Plan A is our 5 year eco-plan addressing the key issues we face as a retailer. It was launched in 2007. Despite a difficult economic environment, these issues remain relevant and competition is increasingly active in this area. We have a number of headline targets in each of the five pillar areas: To make our operations in the UK & ROI carbon neutral and help our customers & suppliers reduce their emissions too To stop sending waste to landfill from our UK & ROI operations and to reduce our use of packaging and carrier bags To make sure that the key raw materials we use come from the most sustainable sources available to us To improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in our supply chains and local communities To help our customers and our employees choose healthier lifestyles
The original pillars have been extended…. For example we will achieve carbon neutral operations by 2015 currently M&S in the UK has emissions of 650,000 tonnes of CO2 Promote active lifestyles for our customers -
We have extended our existing 5 pillars with 2 new ones:- Involving our customers in Plan A Making Plan A how we do business
Primarily through energy and transport savings, the carbon footprint has been reduced by 18% UK stores have increased their energy efficiency by 10% Store Managers have clear Plan A KPIs on their objectives The vehicle fleet has more efficient trucks and loading has been improved The result has been a reduction in the vehicle fleet Nearly a third of electricity usage is from green sources
41% of waste is recycled Food and GM packaging has been reduced We are now recylcing or re-using 125m hangers per year 37m waste plastic bottles used to make polyester
Oxfam, a major UK charity has worked with M&S to provide a win win situation. Customers drop their clothes off in Oxfam shops and receive a £5 voucher to spend in our Stores when they spend over £35. Resulting additional sales are calculated to be £14m And on Foods and GM, we’ve used nearly 400 million less carriers
Because Plan A will become the way we all do business Plan A impacts all our areas We will have greater influence communicating as one team We can all benefit from the costs savings And you will have now received your Action Plans supported by the International team…
