  2. 2. GRUP D’EXPERIMENTACIÓ PER AL PLURILINGÜISME 2 1. You will learn the difference between solid shapes and plane shapes. 2. You will observe and identify squares and rectangles all over our classroom. 3. You will learn what’s the difference between a rectangle and a square. 4. You will learn the properties of plane shapes such as sides and corners. 5. You will learn that the point where two sides meet is called a corner. 6. You will learn to measure lengths widths. 7. You will draw squares and rectangles according to a measure given. 8. You will work in teams to measure perimeters and areas from squares and rectangles in real life. 9. You will observe pictures/reality to identify squares and rectangles trying to deduce their real dimensions and decide which unit is better in each situation. 10.You have to use English as much as you can at all times. Are you ready????? Ten tips for learning success
  3. 3. GEOMETRY: PERIMETERS AND AREAS ESCOLA SANTA ANNA GEP Escola Santa Anna Maria Jesús Sánchez i Carme Florit 3 I created a Power point presentation to introduce this unit. This has been the text the students have worked with. Here is the link to the presentation in Slideshare: http://www.slideshare.net/cflorit/geometry-perimeter-and-area-60336722 This is the collection of worksheets students have worked with. Pupil’s Name: Activities

  5. 5. GEOMETRY: PERIMETERS AND AREAS ESCOLA SANTA ANNA GEP Escola Santa Anna Maria Jesús Sánchez i Carme Florit 5 Session 2 - Worksheet 2 Let’s measure perimeters To do this task, you need a ruler, a table and a notebook. 1.Using the ruler, measure the 4 sides of your table. Write the numbers in the right place: 2.Calculate the perimeter of your table: Remember : h + h + w + w = perimeter (cm) 3.Using the ruler, measure the 4 sides of your notebook. Write the numbers in the right place: 4.Calculate the perimeter of your notebook: Width = w = ...... cm Width = w = ....... cm Height = h = ....... cm Height = h = ....... cm Width = w = ...... cm Width = w = ....... cm Height = h = ....... cm Height = h = ....... cm
  6. 6. GEOMETRY: PERIMETERS AND AREAS ESCOLA SANTA ANNA GEP Escola Santa Anna Maria Jesús Sánchez i Carme Florit 6 Remember : h + h + w + w = perimeter (cm) 5. The perimeter is ......................................................................................... 6 – Calculate the perimeter of this square: A. 16 cm B. 20 cm C. 25 cm 5 cm 7– Calculate the perimeter of this rectangle: A. 13 m B. 21 m C. 26 m 8 cm 5 cm
  7. 7. GEOMETRY: PERIMETERS AND AREAS ESCOLA SANTA ANNA GEP Escola Santa Anna Maria Jesús Sánchez i Carme Florit 7 Reinforcement and Extension activities: Session 3 - Worksheet 3 Let’s measure perimeters and areas 1.The area of a square is .......................................................................................... 2.The area of a rectangle is ...................................................................................... 3.Calculate the area of this rectangle: 9 cm A. 26 cm2 4 cm B. 36 cm2 C. 32 cm2 4. Calculate the area of this square: 7 m A. 40 m2 B. 28 m2 C. 49 m2 5.If the perimeter of a square is 16 m, how long is the side? .............................. 6. A square-shaped window is 30 cm each side. What is its area? .....................
  8. 8. GEOMETRY: PERIMETERS AND AREAS ESCOLA SANTA ANNA GEP Escola Santa Anna Maria Jesús Sánchez i Carme Florit 8 Homework – Your Bedroom 1. – Measure your bedroom. . How many meters does the length (long side) measure? ---------- . How many meters does the width (short side) measure? ---------- . Is your room a square? Yes, it is / No, it isn’t. . Is your room a rectangle? Yes, it is / No, it isn’t. 2. - Now, you can calculate the perimeter of your room (in case your room is a square, you must draw it here). a a a a Perimeter = a + a + a + a = m The perimeter of my room is --------------- square meters 3. - Calculate the area of your room a b Area= a x b= m2 The area of my room is -------------- square meters. . Is your room a square? Yes, it is / No, it isn’t . Is your room a rectangle? Yes, it is / No, it isn’t

If the perimeter of a square is 16 m, how long is the side? ................................. 2 . A square-shaped window is 30 cm each side. What is its area? ....................... 3 . Draw a square that has sides with a lenght of 4cm. 4 . Draw a rectangle with a width of 9 cm and a height of 6 cm. 5. Match A flat shape with 4 equals sides and 4 right angles. rectangle A flat shape where opposite sides are parallel and of equal lenght square

GEOMETRY: PERIMETERS AND AREAS ESCOLA SANTA ANNA GEP Escola Santa Anna Maria Jesús Sánchez i Carme Florit 10 Session 5 - Worksheet 5 Group Project: A Room at School At school we want to renovate the floor and put down new tiles and a new baseboard. TILES BASEBOARD We have 8 equal size classrooms, a computer room, a music classroom, a support classroom, an English classroom, a staff room and the boys’ toilets and girls’ toilets. Each group is in charge of measuring one of these rooms. Two students will be in charge of measuring and the third student has to note the measurements down. Your group has assigned the room: ............................................................................................................................. Tasks: 1. Your group has to show a drawing of the room with the measurements. 2. Your group has to calculate the area and the perimeter of your assigned room. 3. Your group has to say how many square meters of tiles are needed and how many meters of baseboard are needed. 4. Finally, your group has to share the information with the rest of the class by a poster.
