Subject and object pronouns
1. WHAT IS A PRONOUN?
A pronoun is a word used to substitute
a noun to make a phrase less repetitive
Compare:
•Joe is my brother. Joe is 16 years old and
goes to school. Joe likes to play soccer and
basketball. Joe has many friends. His
friends like Joe because Joe is nice and fun.
•Joe is my brother. He is 16 years old and
goes to school. Joe likes to play soccer and
basketball. He has many friends. They like
him because he is nice and fun.
2. SUBJECT PRONOUNS
Subjectpronouns substitute a noun that
functions as a subject:
• My mom loves Joe. She loves Joe
• Joe likes to play soccer. He likes to play soccer
• Joe and I go to school. We go to school.
NOTE: The subject pronoun comes before the
verb
3. OBJECT PRONOUNS
Objectpronouns substitute a noun that functions
as an object:
• My mom loves Joe. My mom loves him
• Joe likes his friends. Joe likes them
• Joe is talking to Ann. Joe is talking to her.
NOTE: The object pronoun comes after
the verb
