Goal: To examine the present reality of social media’s
impact on learning and what tools are out there that can
be used to address leadership training challenges. We
will accomplish this by:
discussing the difference/similarities between e-
learning, social learning, mobile learning and
online learning.

23. Learning with Technology
Which of these questions are most important
to you when you think of using technology to
train/form leaders/volunteers :
1. How can we use cutting-edge technology
in training?
2. How can we leverage technologies that
younger generations are using?
3. What are the best technologies for e-
learning?
4. How can we adapt technology to aid
human learning?
29. 29
Who is your audience?
What do you need to communicate?
What technology tools does your
audience already use?
What technology tools do you want to
use?
Making technology work together
These are elements of a good plan...
30. 30
What are they already using?
Start where you are:
What types of tools are they using?
What programs are they using?
What are you comfortable with?
What best suits your ministry needs
right now?
31. How do we create a culture of shared
information for forming ministry
leaders?
How do you share information now?
Here are some ways you could share
information that same information…
32. Information Sharing As Part of A
Leadership Development Strategy
Dropbox for your team of volunteers

34. Who might resist using of this
technology for training?
How do we deal with resistance?
35.
36. Identify Next Steps
Do you need additional education or training?
How will you evaluate your programs in order
to determine which technologies will best
serve you?
How do you envision technology helping you
reach your goals/objectives?
Find your Digital Edge
How will you plan? With whom?
Execute!
37. We pray…
Holy Spirit, you blessed the first disciples with the power to
spread God’s love throughout the world.
Give us a new power to proclaim your word through our
own unique gifts and through the channels of
communication available to us.
Make us willing to receive that word as it enters our daily
lives.
Guide all who share the message and those who receive it,
so that all people may come to know your truth and be
renewed by your love.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord.
Amen. (adapted from the National Catholic Communications Office)

Blogging
Blogs (from “web-log”):
Media Sharing
websites or portions of a website
with regular entries of
Microblogging
commentary, Direct Communication
descriptions of
events, or other materials such as
graphics or video. Entries are
commonly displayed in reverse

adapted from Wikipedia
What tools do you want to use?
40. 40
CASE STUDY:
Parent Portal Blog on
www.mccym.net allows for easy
posting of “10 minute read” articles
related to parenting, youth culture,
current topics at youth night, etc.
TIP:
If you’re looking to create a basic
website for your parish youth ministry
but you don’t have a lot of time, skill
or financial resources, a free blog
from blogspot or wordpress is a great
way to get started sharing
information!
41. 41
Microblogging
a broadcast medium in the form
of blogging. A microblog differs
from a traditional blog in that its
content is typically much
smaller, in both actual size and
www.twitter.com aggregate file size. A microblog
www.flocknotes.com entry could consist of nothing
but a short sentence fragment,
an image or embedded video.

42. 42
CASE STUDY:
During NCYC 2009 we used a twitter account
to keep parents and supporters back home
updated on what we were doing in
Columbus. We also used twitter to send our
participants reflection questions and
reminders about bus pick up times & curfew.
TIP:
Twitter is a great way to send short bursts of
timely information (e.g., “youth night has
been cancelled for tonight because Chris is in
New Orleans.See you next weekend!”)
43. 43
Social Networking
an online service focused on
building and reflecting of social
networks or social relations
among people who share
interests and/or activities. A
www.facebook.com social network service
www.myspace.com essentially consists of a
representation of each user
(often a profile), his/her social
links, and a variety of additional
services.

44. 44
CASE STUDY:
This year our Youth Leader Team used
Facebook to create an “event” listing for our
annual youth ministry kickoff cookout event.
They invited their friends and they were able
to see who was planning to come in advance.
TIP:
You don’t have to be the Social Networking
expert. Creating and maintaining a
Facebook or Myspace presence is a great
project for a young leader or group of young
leaders, as long as they have appropriate
adult guidance.
45. 45
Media Sharing
Sites which make it easy to
upload and share media such
as video, pictures, sound clips,
etc.
www.youtube.com
www.flickr.com
www.wingclips.com
www.keepvid.com
46. 46
CASE STUDY:
Wingclips has a free library of video clips
which you can search by topic. For example,
if you’re looking for a clip on status, Wingclips
will suggest clips from movies like Mr. Deeds
and Rudy
TIP:
If you’re going to use a clip from the internet
in a presentation you can try using a site like
www.keepvids.com to download it to your
computer. This way you don’t have to rely on
an internet connection. Just be aware of
copyright limitations.
47. 47
Direct Communication
refers to targeted
communication to or with
specific users or groups of
users (e.g., e-mail, text
messaging, etc.)
Sms Gateway
www.simplyyouthministry.com/txt.html
www.constantcontact.com
48. 48
CASE STUDY:
We use SMS Gateways to send text
message reminders to students every
week. We also use this service to
send cancelation notices and other
short pieces of information.
TIP:
Sometimes you have to send more
than you can fit in a txt message. Be
sure to follow up important e-mail
messages with a txt message
reminder to students to check their
email accounts!
There is much talk these days about the rapid pace of change; so rapid that the present only may be described from the past. Illustrating this point is an interesting advertisement, seen on airport walls, depicting the evolution of music technology using four images: vinyl albums (50-60s) eight track tapes (70s) to cassette tapes (80s) to CDs (90s), and finally to iPods and MP3 players (current decade). This simple depiction is both symbolic and a real example of the rapid rate of change of all technology. It demonstrates that information may be broken down into smaller and smaller bits, reproduced at faster and faster rates, and accessed and consumed by growing audiences of individuals and groups, causing the content we share to multiply at rates beyond our imagination.Technology, however, is not the only part of our world experiencing rapid change.
What were some specific questions you hoped that we would discuss today?
50% of devices connected to the internet will be mobile. Consider that young people are typically “early adopters” of new technology, so the degree to which young people will connect to the internet through their cell phones will continue to increase substantially over the next few years. And consider this: The fastest growing segment of the mobile computing market has been the smartphone. Industry analysts report that 173.8 million units were sold in the first quarter of 2010 alone. Based on portability and cost, it is predicted that mobile devices (smartphone, tablet, etc) may lead to the demise of the desktop computer for the typical user within the next 5 years.VIRTUAL TRAINER WILL ADD, FASTEST GROWING MARKET FOR SMARTPHONES IS OUTSIDE THE US, PRIMARILY IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. MANY SMARTPHONE PRODUCERS ARE OPTING FOR LOWER QUALITY PHONE SERVICES IN EXCHANGE FOR HIGHER QUALITY MEDIA SERVICES.
Things have changed recently at a very rapid pace, as anyone who tries to keep up with understands (i.e., still saying web 2.0 vs. social web). Consider the technology for the automobile... Technology has so impacted how cars are made and how they operate that a car today is incredibly different from a car 20-40 years ago. My grandpa could fix a lot in his cars back in the day. Now a scope and a mechanic with computer certification is required to make those repairs. Consider the amount of technology just in your world... Now in our world... (invite participants to name all the tech that they use and that others around them use). “A clutch is a clutch, but not so much!”
Between now and 2014, the tablet market is estimated to grow 123% (http://gigaom.com/mobile/stat-shot-mobile-computing-has-won-2/). Ask participants to share some of their favorite apps, backchannel and live. Virtual trainer can share examples about app usage and young people/children from experience. Some parents today use apps just like our parents used TV to babysit us. We need to monitor those games and apps and balance usage. Critical thinking and how to access media.Again, experts believe that more users will connect to the Internet via mobile devices than desktop PCs within 5 years.Source: morganstanley.com/institutional/techresearch/mobile_internet_report122009.html
Virtual trainer: put this link up in the back channel for people (source of quote): http://www.jisc.ac.uk/publications/reports/2007/twweb2.aspxSome compare this to the printing press for everyone not just those with journalistic credentials, the citizen journalist. Marketers used to assume they knew what we wanted, now they know, based on a variety of means—name examples, e.g., hulu.com asks “was this ad relevant to you?”, etc.Expand upon these three C’s of Web 2.0 which we will be exploring further today in this workshop by sharing stories about this from your experience, e.g., connecting with an old friend on facebook, sharing pictures with grandparents of kids, reviewing hotels on tripadvisor, etc. Then ask, how many people believe this, that we are or have constructed a new social fabric? Ask for raise of hands, encourage back channel conversation (virtual trainer).
We have always learned socially however social media is changing how that happens. The advent of social media has brought an interest in social learning.
R.E. Mayer, Applying the science of learning book 2011 what experiences do you think would change the learners you want to teach or training
E-learning started happening in with the first CBT’s it was all about content and individualized learning, we still use this term today to talk about learning that takes place on line and it is still about content and content management.M-learning, mobile learning is emerging. It is thought of as “just in time learning” and is less about content as it is about context.S-learning, or social media learning is about community and learning together. All three of these things intersect and take place online.
p. 8-10 When considering this definition we have to consider the what of e-learning courses which is both the content and methods that help people learn. The How which is how it is delivered but most importantly the whyIn short the E in e-learning is the how and the learning is the what and the why. P.10-11
Page 13 ofe-learning instruction only if it is done intentionallyE-learning in 2001 11%, 2006 29%, 2011 36.5% according to ASTDWhat are the promises? Fast, accessible, just in time learningObstacales, its not magic, biggest one compatibility,
p. 31-32 E-learning and the Science of InstructionFirst three technology centered approach the last one a learner centered approach
How do we remain learner centered? Ask question, what do they need to know and do? And how can I know they can or have applied it?
Motivation is the key to successful learning regardless of the mode or format of learning
What motivates you?
You need a p
So, What would Jesus tweet? What do you think the caption for this photo might be?Joke: the real caption for this photo is probably, “what the heck is my password again?”Really, how would Jesus share the good news today?
Education: If the answer is yes, then you need to look at where you can get that education or training. Online, local workshop opportunities, community college, off-the-shelf package/program, etc. Is there a parishioner who would volunteer their time to teach you? Which of these learning styles best suits you? What will your budget support? And so on….Evaluate: Which program or area of a program can best be helped by implementing technology? Which technology do you want to use? What programs? First decide the need, then the type of technology, then the application. (Example: You need a quick and uniform way to connect with your entire group at NCYC this fall. You decide that group texting is the technology you want to use. Realizing that your budget cannot afford a paid service, you research the free services available online and decide you will use WeTxt. NEED-TECHNOLOGY-APPLICATIONEnvision: Where are you starting from? What do you want a particular technology to do for you? How will you measure success/how will your ministry look if this technology is 100% successful in meeting the identified need? Who can help you get there? And what is the plan for getting from where you are now to where you want to be? DIGITAL EDGE: YOUR STARTING POINT, WHERE YOU AREExecute: Put it into play. One step at a time. Know that you will have to repeat these steps over and over again. You (meaning your team) will have to continue educating yourselves as new technologies emerge. You will have to continue to evaluate needs, technology responses, and specific applications based on your unique circumstances. You will need to envision how to get from identification of the need to successfully meeting it.
Leigh/Leader: Confident that God hears all prayers, we pray together:Holy Spirit, you blessed the first disciples with the power to spread God’s love throughout the world. Give us a new power to proclaim your word through our own unique gifts and through the channels of communication available to us. Make us willing to receive that word as it enters our daily lives. Guide all who share the message and those who receive it, so that all people may come to know your truth and be renewed by your love. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.
