established by the Italian Constitutional Chart and
from a Special Statute of 1948
• Surface area: 6.233 km2 (2% of whole Italy)
• Territorial geography:
 20% above 2.000 m
 10% below 500 m
 65% forest
• Inhabitants: ~ 530.000
• 217 Municipalities; 5 with > 10.000 residents
• Different cultures integrated:
o Several linguistic minority groups
o Urban, rural and mountain areas
• 90% of local taxes are retained
• Per-capita GDP: 30.700 Euro (2011)
• Public investment in R&D: 1,2% of GDP
