Rex Tsai gave a talk on the paradigm shift between GNOME 2 and GNOME 3, and the challenges of productivity and focus in the new desktop environment. Some key differences are GNOME 3's use of Clutter for animations and the GNOME Shell interface. Tools like Zeitgeist and the Activity Journal aim to help with managing complexity, finding information, and reminding users of tasks. Zeitgeist in particular logs events to provide context based on files, time, and location used. While the Activity Journal was initially rejected, Zeitgeist integration into GNOME is ongoing work toward GNOME 3.2.

30. GAC Rejected at Jun 2010
+ GNOME Activity Journal (desktop)
- the original design idea is one we want to see happen during the
GNOME 3 development.
- needs more integration with the rest of the desktop and the overall
GNOME design; right now, it feels too much like a standalone
application.
- the team might need to work a bit more closely with other GNOME
teams for the integration.
=> rejected
