2. INTRODUCTION
Chemical
plaque control agents are an ideal
adjunct to mechanical plaque control
procedures.
They are mainly used in individuals with
defective host defense mechanism
mentally or physically handicapped
patients who have undergone surgical
procedures post operatively
3. FIRST GENERATION ANTI
PLAQUE AGENTS
First
generation agents include
antibiotics
phenols
quaternary ammonium compounds
oxygenating compounds
sanguanarine
They are capable of reducing plaque scores by
about 20-50%
4. PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS
Reduces
plaque accumulation
They are essential oils, thymol, methyl
salicilate, benzoic acid &boric acid.
Popular example is listerine
It acts on bacterial cell wall cause disruption
and also inhibition of bacterial enzymes.
Recommended usage is twice daily
Adverse effects of listerine include burning
sensation and bitter taste.
5. TRICLOSAN
It
is both phenolic and non ionic germicide
with low toxicity & a broad spectrum of
antibacterial activity.
Acts on microbial cytoplasmic membrane ,
inducing leakage of cellular constituents and
there by causing bacteriolysis.
It delayes plaque maturation and inhibit
formation of inflamatory mediators .
6. SANGUINARINE
Contains alkaloid extract from sanguinarine
canadensis.
Effective against wide variety of gram –ve
organism
Exhibit good retentive property with dental
plaque when used as mouth rinse
7. Oxygenated compounds
Includes
hydrogen peroxide and per borate
mouth rinse.
Alters the membrane permiability of
microorganisms .
Hydrogen peroxide is used in patients with
acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis
8. QUATERNARY AMMONIUM
COMPOUNDS
Includes
cetylpyrinidium chloride &
benzethonium chloride.
The positively charged molecule reacts with
the negatively charged cell membrane &
there by destroys the cell wall structure.
Effective against developing plaque which
contain predominantly gram +ve organism.
