Greece - 4 - The wealth and diversity of the Greek seas, the endless kilometers of the Greek coast and the thousands of Greek islands, the protected sea areas covering thousands of square kilometers, the mild climate, the high percentage of sunshine and its interesting and varying landscape make Greece the ideal destination for the development of sea tourism activities. This advantage is strengthened both by thousands of years of marine tradition and by conditions favorable for sea travelling: the Greek seas are considered safe, distances between coasts are small, while conditions related to wind strength, ambient and sea temperatures are equally favorable. Greece Traces of a centuries-old and important history is etched in every corner of Greek land: findings from the Prehistoric and Archaic Periods, unique works from Classical, Hellenistic, Medieval and Byzantine monuments, creations from folk art cultures, traces from the passing eons of other civilizations and different religions, that coexist with current creations, constructions and modern works of art. Greece is a true paradise for cultural tourism, a large journey into history and art. Educational excursions, theatrical productions, festivals, pilgrimages, visits to archaeological sites, monuments and museums, excursions to study the natural environment, folk art and culture – these are just a few of the many things that Greece has to offer in the cultural tourism sector.Whoever really wants to understand Greece, its history and its people, he will find an unrivalled cultural experience through traveling into the area and chronological period of Greek culture. Sip a glass of ouzo or wine with grilled octopus or any other Greek dish while sitting under the shade of a tree in a small tavern by the sea on an island in the Aegean. When you return home, try to repeat this experience by preparing the same meal and serving the same drink. Wherever you try to repeat this, you will soon realize that it does not taste the same. It’s not that something is wrong with your palate or your culinary skills, it’s that the Greek ritual when eating a meal –mainly a combination of what you are eating and where you are eating it- cannot be repeated, extracted or copied. It is simply something you can only find, taste and enjoy in Greece.
Greece, Mykonos - 5 - Experience the beauty of MYKONOS Island According to archaeological finds on the island but also in historical sources, the ancient city of Mykonos was founded in the 11th century by Iones from Athens who with their leader Ippokli, son of Nilea, settled in the place of present day Chora. Mykonos has close ties to Delos and was a member of the Delian alliance. During the height of Delos, Mykonos experienced prosperity due to the economic boom of the neighboring island but with the disaster of Delos it fell into obscurity. After a Byzantine period, from 1204 with the fall of the City to the Franks, the island is taken over by the Venetians. Since then many have passed through the island: Catalans, pirates occasionally, Turks of course and for a short period during the period of Great Aikaterinis and Orlof, the Russians as well until the liberation In about the middle of the 20th century, Mykonos “was discovered” by the locals and foreigners resulting in becoming one of the most touristic sites in the world. The inhabitants easily adapted to the new conditions, a fact which produced the successful tourist model of Mykonos. Led by intuition and hard work, the people of Mykonos ensured their island glory and wealth. Today the island of Mykonos is supplementing their infrastructure, improving the services offered and firmly claiming an eminent position in international tourism.

Corfu, Greece - 13 - The cosmopolitan island of Corfu is probably the most well known island of the Ionian complex and one of the most popular in the whole Mediterranean. It is a pole of attraction for hundreds of thousands visitors every year as well as source of inspiration for all kinds of art, carrying a huge cultural heritage and disposing special splendor which combined with its natural beauty, marvelous climate, beaches and interesting sights, makes the island one of the top destinations for Greek and foreign travelers. Its area covers a surface of 591 km2 and its coasts stretch 217 km. Corfu (Kerkira) was named after a woman. According to mythology, Poseidon fell in love with the daughter of Aesopos, Korkira, and brought her to this island naming it after her. The offspring of this love was a little boy, named Faiakas. He was to establish later the Kingdom of Faiakes, which according to Homer was the last stop of Ulysses before he returned to Ithaca. The international name of Corfu was given to the island due to the two citadels (perched on two different tops) which can be found in the town of Corfu. Another ancient name that we can meet is Drepanon (scythe), which was attributed to the island because of its shape. Corfu defines the Hellenic sea borders with Italy and Albania. This strategic position is responsible for the many conquests the island has undergone, influencing its culture, mores and customs. The Venetians, the French and the English passed on to the island many strong cultural elements resulting in the integration of the western culture to the Greek identity. Corfu joined Greece in 1864. The island has made a significant contribution to education, literature, arts and politics. The first governor of modern Greece, IoannisKapodistrias, the authors Andreas Moustoksidis and IakovosPolilas, NikolaosMantzaros, who wrote the music for the Greek National Anthem, and the Theotokis family, which gave birth to many significant politicians and authors, come from Corfu. In 1824 the first Greek university known as Ionian Academy, was founded on the island. In 1840 the first philharmonic orchestra of Greece was established. It is not an accidental fact that today Corfu numbers 18 philharmonic orchestras.

  • 48. The second largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is “Almost a Continent” as their ads suggest. The variety of landscapes and lifestyles makes that more than a clever slogan. The sharp contrasts between the glitzy high-roller beach resorts of the Costa Smeralda and the wild mountain landscapes and sheep farms of the rugged interior are only part of the island’s infinite variety. Porto Cervo, built to simulate a fishing village, is the center for high-end travelers and those who like to be where the “beautiful” people go, its shops filled with designer wear and its harbor with sleek yachts. Smaller Baia Sardinia is less flashy, with small shops and cafes on the waterfront, good beaches and a coastal walk to small beaches secluded among huge weather-worn boulders. It is worth renting a car to explore the island’s interior, where shepherds guard flocks in scrub-covered fields below high jagged mountain peaks. Hikers and climbers can hire local guides or choose one of the resorts that offer guided excursions. Follow the steep road to Orgosolo to admire its more than 300 original wall murals. In the south, Cagliari, the capital, is an attractive city with a new opera house and notable churches including the Sanctuary and Basilica of Bonaria and the 6th-century ruins of San Saturnio, as well as a Roman Amphitheater still used for summer opera. In nearby Pula, excavated ruins reveal the story Nora, a Phoenician city captured by Carthage and finally by the Romans.
