Reading Drama Here are some ideas, seen before in our reading of short stories, that apply to reading fiction in general: become familiar with the vocabulary. Think about multiple meanings for one word. Read with a pencil and underline odd or unfamiliar words. Read with a dictionary nearby. remain engaged while reading. Write notes to self in the margins of the book. Underline parts that speak out to you. Keep a sheet of paper nearby for note taking and jotting. write, underline, make notes in the margin of your textbook or on a separate sheet of paper. Keep yourself on task and make a record for coming back to later. understand the piece. Read the title. Think about character, plot, theme and idea. How do the parts relate to the whole? find meaning behind the literal words and situations presented. Think about both literal and figurative meanings. Fill in the blank: "This is a piece about . . . ." In the blank think about an idea, a meaning, a commentary on life. find meaning behind the abstract images or situations. What do the particulars suggest more generally? As you read a play, try to imagine what the sets, scenery, surroundings of the characters look like as the actors move through them imagine the tone of voice, the attitudes, the body language, the actions of the characters as they speak their lines note stage directions (usually given inside brackets in italic type immediately after the character name)--here the author tells actors how the lines are to be delivered, how they are to appear or seem to the audience, how the lines should come to life on the stage Optional: Click below to see other ideas about how to read a play Reading Ibsen You can access the play at Gutenberg eBooks Optional: Links Related to A Doll's House on the Internet You might like to read some pages related to A Doll's House found on the Internet: Ibsen's Theatre / A Doll House (from Westchester University) provides a nice introduction to Ibsen and the meaning of the play Gutenberg Project has the full text of the play online. eNotes has the full text of the play online, also. Reading A Doll's House Before Reading: A Bit of Background A Doll's House was first published for the stage in 1879. As you read, you must remember that the world of 1879 was quite a bit different from the world today. Women were not allowed to own property, to vote, could not take out a loan in their own name, and were expected by the conventions of society to be housewives focused on their home, their husbands, and their children. Reading Act I 1. Why does Nora think that "this is the first Christmas that we have not needed to economise"? 2. What does Nora suggest as a Christmas present for herself from Torvald? What is the reason, we later find, that she wants this particular present? 3. Describe what we learn about the trip to Italy take by Nora and Torvald. 4. Describe the circumstances around Christine's marriage and the deat.

An old powerpoint from highschool for higher level IB engilsh. A doll's house is one of my favorite plays so if you're trying to cheat your way from reading it I'll be mad. Read it, it's awesome. And yes, the characters are excruciatingly whiny and obnoxious and all remind me of my sister. Hope it helps!

Analytical Essay Comment by Rachel D Heicher: Don’t forget to give the essay a more specific title for your final draft! The play is set in a well-furnished living room. The play begins with Nora Helmer entering the living room with several packages. Torvald Helmer then comes out of his study and into the living room. He greets her and then talks to her about spending so much on gifts. Based on the conversation, it is clear that the two have had to be careful with money throughout their life. It also shows that Torvald has secured a new job at the bank, and it will enable them to live more comfortably. The play displays a lot of themes which it shows, and the paper shall discuss the themes in greater depth. Comment by Rachel D Heicher: What play? You’ll have to introduce the play by title and author first, so that your audience knows what you’re talking about. Comment by Rachel D Heicher: Avoid telling your readers what the paper will discuss. Instead, construct a thesis statement that makes a specific claim about the play. What is the main idea that you want to get across to your readers about “A Doll’s House”? The doll house act is play by Henrik Ibsen. In the play, the writer has done his best to paint a clear picture regarding the role that women play in the society. He tries to portray the sacrifices that the women who are involved in economic activities in the society have to play. The female characters in the play have done exemplary work in showing that the male counterparts have refused to sacrifice their integrity (Templeton, 1989). This is about the women who have sacrificed their integrity time after time in their masses. To support the needs of her mother Mrs. Linde decides to leave Krogstad the real love of her life. She does this because Krogstad does not have any money. She is therefore forced to get a new lover who is richer. In the play, there is also the nanny who had to abandon her young child to support herself. She goes to work for Nora as her caretaker and also as the children's caretaker. Comment by Rachel D Heicher: When you include info from your source, you need to make it clear where your use of that source begins. The citation marks the end of the use of the source, but it isn’t clear here where the source material begins. Make sure you introduce the source properly. The nanny tells Nora that she considers herself to be lucky to have a job. The nanny also goes on to tell Nora that she had been led astray. In the play, Nora stands out as the most financial advantage woman. However, this does not exempt her from leading a difficult life just like the other women. Her problems are as a result of society's view which is that Torvald should be the head of the marriage. Torvald in the play issues decrees and even gets condescending to his wife, Nora. The play depicts Nora as having a secret of a loan that she had borrowed to save her husband. She hides this secret from her husband would not like the fact t.
