- 37. How popular? A country’s population refers to the total number of people that are living there. China is the most populated country in the world. There are over 1.3 billion people living there. With a population of just over 11,000 , Tuvalu is one of the least populated countries in the world. What do you think the population of Singapore is?
- 44. Population structure MEDCs and LEDCs usually have differently structured populations due to differences in their birth and death rates. This shows the total population of males and females in different age ranges. The population structure of a country is usually drawn on a graph called a population pyramid . How would you describe the structure of this population pyramid?

In 1999, Asia accounted for 60% of the world’s population. Asia was followed by Africa on 12.8% and Europe on 12.2%. - Teacher’s note: Having a high birth rate will result in more babies being born within the country. Having a low death rate will result in people staying alive for longer. If a country’s birth rate rises or its death rate falls, there is a good chance that the population will increase. If a country has a birth rate that is rising and a death rate that is falling, the population will definitely increase. If more countries are developing medically, then their death rates will fall as their health care improves. - Teacher’s note: Typically, LEDCs have faster growing populations than MEDCs. This is because the birth rates of LEDCs tend to be so much higher than the death rates. This is due to many reasons: a lack of medical contraception, a tradition for large families, the need for children to support the family, etc. Worksheet: The worksheet MEDCs and LEDCs accompanies this slide. - Teacher’s note: This population pyramid has quite a wide base. There is a very rapid narrowing of the sides of the pyramid and there is a very small percentage of the population who live to an old age. There appears to be a pronounced difference between the number of females and males surviving in this country. This could be due to ongoing wars. This is a population pyramid for an LEDC.
