FOURTH OF JULY PAGEANT
The City of McAllen Parks & Recreation
Department will host its Little Miss Fourth of
July Pageant Saturday, June 19, 2010, from 2:00
p.m. - 4:00 p.m., at the Palm View Community

& Production
Celebrate America’s Independence by
participating in McAllen’s 82nd Annual
Fourth of July Parade. Join us in honoring the
individuals who have protected our freedom,
yesterday and today!          Patriotic groups,
marching bands, clubs & entertainers are
encouraged to enter a float or walk along. All
Veterans’ Organizations are invited to march
in the Parade. Trophies will be awarded. Entry
deadline is June 23, 2010. Pick up/drop off
entries at the Parks and Recreation Office on
South Ware Road. There is a $40 fee for all
commercial entries. All other entries are FREE.

PRE-SCHOOL (3,4 & 5 yr. olds)
                                                    This program will help children make
                                                    the physical and mental adjustment of
                                                    submerging their faces under water and
                                                    holding their breath without discomfort.
                                                    Once they pass this stage, they are taught to
                                                    float on their front and back and progress to
                                                    arm strokes.



                                                    YOUTH (6-14 yr. olds)
                                                    A standard American Red Cross advancement
                                                    program will be taught. Instruction for
                                                    Beginning Swimmers through Advanced
                                                    Swimmers is scheduled at all class times.

ORIENTATION

Introduces the infant or toddler to the
pleasures of water. The parent is instructed
in techniques for teaching their child
fundamental water skills. At least one
parent per child will be strictly enforced. All
persons must wear swimming suits. Lined
swim diapers are required for infants. Swim
diapers are available for purchase at all City
of McAllen pools.

SUPERVISED PLAYGROUND & GYMNASIUM PROGRAM
Warm summer days with loads of fun at the Parks and Recreation Department’s excellent playground and gymnasium programs. Local field
trips and city-wide special events add up to a wonderful summer. A variety of events and activities are planned for the summer. Children with
Special Needs will be accommodated at the Milam Elementary School playground location. The program will conclude with Super Friday, a
day of food, games, swimming and fun at Cascade Park and Pool on Friday, August 13th.

SUMMER THEATER
This Summer Theater program will include the rehearsal and
performance of a full theatrical play and a musical, including all
aspects of technical production. We are looking for a maximum
“company” of 65 (cast & crew). Performances will be held at the
McAllen Auditorium on July 30th & 31st. Auditions involve singing,
reading and movement; but there is no need to prepare. Even if

TENNIS INSTRUCTION
(TINY TOTS, YOUTH, TEENS & ADULTS)
Discover the lifetime sport of tennis. Classes are designed to introduce the beginner to
fun-filled court action and prepare the advanced player for match play. This program
will provide instruction in forehand, backhand, and the serve. Classes will progress to
rally, basic court position play and court strategy. Age groups may be combined due to
number of registrations. For the Tiny Tots (4 - 6 yr.), an introduction to the basic elements
of tennis will be taught. Specially designed equipment may be used on modified courts.
SOME RACQUETS MAY BE PROVIDED FOR THE TINY TOTS. CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED!

LITTLE MISS FOURTH OF JULY PAGEANT The City of McAllen Parks & Recreation Department will host its Little Miss Fourth of July Pageant Saturday, June 19, 2010, from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., at the Palm View Community Center (3401 Jordan). The pageant is open to PRESENTED BY any Valley Residents who are 5 & 6 years old as of July 1, 2010 (10 entries min.). Register early, last day to register (no exceptions) will be Wednesday, June 16th at 7:00 p.m. Participants will be judged on an interview, talent and modeling in western wear. Entry forms are available at Palm View Community Center. If you need additional information, please call d vide 681-3360. Free cher Pa FEE: $20 82nd Anniversary at A r CLASS #: 310046.00 of McAllen’s FOURTH OF JULY PARADE Fourth of July Presented by Shell Exploration Celebration & Production Celebrate America’s Independence by participating in McAllen’s 82nd Annual Fourth of July Parade. Join us in honoring the individuals who have protected our freedom, yesterday and today! Patriotic groups, marching bands, clubs & entertainers are encouraged to enter a float or walk along. All Veterans’ Organizations are invited to march in the Parade. Trophies will be awarded. Entry deadline is June 23, 2010. Pick up/drop off entries at the Parks and Recreation Office on South Ware Road. There is a $40 fee for all commercial entries. All other entries are FREE. For information call 681-3333. FOURTH OF JULY CONCERT IN THE SKY FOURTH OF JULY Don’t miss the Annual Fourth of July Fireworks Display at McAllen’s Municipal Park (2100 Tamarack). PUBLIC SWIM & POOL GAMES Join the McAllen Parks and Recreation Department, Public swim will be available from 1:00 p.m. Saturday evening, for a delight of sight and sound. to 6:00 p.m. at Municipal Swimming Pool. This year’s exhibit is sure to be a blast!!! The Fireworks Beat the summer heat with fun and games begin at approximately 9:00 p.m., Saturday, July 3rd. at the pool. 2
  • 4. PRE-SCHOOL (3,4 & 5 yr. olds) This program will help children make the physical and mental adjustment of submerging their faces under water and holding their breath without discomfort. Once they pass this stage, they are taught to float on their front and back and progress to arm strokes. YOUTH (6-14 yr. olds) A standard American Red Cross advancement program will be taught. Instruction for Beginning Swimmers through Advanced Swimmers is scheduled at all class times. GUS & GOLDIE LEARN-TO-SWIM PROGRAM GUS & GOLDIE The most popular swimming program in the ADULT & TEEN LEARN-TO-SWIM LEARN-TO-SWIM PROGRAM Rio Grande Valley is back! Join Gus & Goldie The individual is taken through a series of PROUD SPONSORS progressive steps, allowing everyone to learn and learn important water safety skills. Pre- at their own pace. Class sizes are limited. registration is required for all swimming Session dates are the same as the Gus & classes. Classes are held Monday through Goldie Learn-to-Swim Program. Friday. Participants will receive an official Gus & Goldie t-shirt for each session attended. DATES: ADAPTIVE AQUATICS This aquatics class is designed for students Session 1: June 14 - June 25 with special needs. Trained instructors will Session 2: July 5 - July 16 introduce and guide students in exciting Session 3: July 19 - July 30 water activities and skills. Classes are offered Session 4: August 2 - August 13 for participants age 6 and older. FEE: $25.00/resident • $35.00/non-resident PARENT/BABY WATER ORIENTATION (6 mo. - 2 yrs. 11 mo.) Introduces the infant or toddler to the pleasures of water. The parent is instructed in techniques for teaching their child fundamental water skills. At least one parent per child will be strictly enforced. All persons must wear swimming suits. Lined swim diapers are required for infants. Swim diapers are available for purchase at all City of McAllen pools. 3
