Project Description:
Reasons behind the title
I have chosen to call my magazine ‘E’ because it stands for eclectic, which is the
genre of my magazine. Also, since I am basing my magazine on Q magazine, it fits
in well because they are both titled with one letter. I chose the font ‘Fine Style’
because I think that it is simple but formal, and it is quite similar to Q magazine’s
font. The denotation for the name of the magazine is ‘E’. The verbal code ‘E’
connotes the genre of my magazine, which is eclectic so the E stands for eclectic.
Another thing that influence by choice was my magazine of inspiration, Q because
the masthead for that is only one letter.
For this project I will be taking photographs for my music magazine. The people I
will be taking photographs of will be within the target audience range, mainly
around 16-17, which is the same age as me. For the photos, I will ensure that the
people I choose to take pictures of are fit to the theme of my magazine. Although
my genre is eclectic, I would still like to keep the outfits that the people are
wearing in with the current trends. I will also have some props such as
instruments and musical equipment to tie in with the fact that it is a music
magazine. I will be producing a front cover, contents page and double page
spread in my magazine. I will be competing with Q magazine, which is also my
magazine of inspiration. I will compete with Q in terms of the price even though
they are the same price, it would therefore fall down to the actual content
because the layout is very similar. Therefore, the reader can decide what
magazine to buy through the content that intrigues them the most. The magazine
itself will be 124 pages long (including the front and back cover) as it is released
monthly, therefore there will be more pages than a weekly magazine, which may
have about 50 pages. However, for this particular project, I will be creating the
front cover, contents page and double page spread, which is 4 pages in total. The
price of my magazine will be between £3.50-£4 which is similar to the price of Q
magazine which may help me compete as we would have similar content too and
Q magazine costs £3.99. Another way in which we would compete is through the
content of the magazine because Q magazine includes a lot of interviews and
information about upcoming music and so will my magazine.

Photographer:
The photographer for the front cover, contents page and DPS will be me. I will
predominantly be taking mid-close up photos, which will be roughly from the
waist or lower arms upwards. The reason I have chosen this angle is because it
enables the audience to focus on them more than anything else. For the DPS, I
think I will do a full body shot in order to let the audience view the person’s
outfit in a good amount of detail. For the front cover and contents page, I think I
will have high key lighting to get a clear image of the person. However for the
DPS, I may have more low key lighting to enable me to have a darkish
background and maybe a spotlight kind of effect on the person, but I am not
completely sure yet. I will be editing the photographs that I take in Adobe
Photoshop CS5 to touch them up and give me my desired effects and positioning
etc.

Casting:
These 3 images are some of my photos of inspiration when taking my own
photographs for my magazine front cover, contents page and DPS. The reason
why I have selected these photos for my inspiration is because the two artists
are popular current artists, which will therefore appeal to my target audience.
The first image is of the fashion style, which is quite formal, and trendy in the
current time, which would be suitable to use for the person modeling for my
magazine. The second image is of an artist with a guitar, which is hopefully one
of the props I can use. He is also smiling which gives off a positive for the
magazine altogether instead of it being too serious. The third image is more of a
structured photo-shoot, which I could use as inspiration for the DPS of my
magazine. I think all of these images are good examples of inspiration for Q
magazine because they include a mixture of formality, seriousness and joy,
which I think relates to Q magazine.
I have chosen 3 of my friends and my brother to be the
potential cast of my magazine because they would all be
suitable for the genre because they are young, and they are
all very different which represents the genre of eclectic. I
don’t know whom exactly they look like but I think that
Amber (the far right who will be on the front cover and DPS)
looks like a mixture of Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey, and
Lana has been featured on the front cover on one of the
issues of Q magazine.

Model requirements:
Wardrobe and Look:
When I take my photographs of the models, I would preferably like them to wear
outfits similar to those pictured above. The girl who I will photograph will be in
black and white to keep up the simplistic theme of my magazine. The boy who I
will photograph will be dressed very casually in simplistic clothing with plain
In the images above, the outfits are not quite what I will try and replicate, but
they are good photos to represent the height requirements that I am looking for.
I want the models to be a good height, not too short and not too tall, so more of
an average height.

colours, again to keep with the theme of my magazine which also ties in with Q
magazine’s simplistic layout.
Hair and Make up:
When I take my photos, I hope to have similar hair to the photographs above.
This is because it is fashionable and also it is quite casual for day-to-day wear.
This ties in with my eclectic genre because it is up-to-date with trends. The girl
model will wear light makeup with perhaps a bit of eye makeup to keep up a
rather natural look. For the boy model, I will be able to touch up any blemishes
or spots using Photoshop.
Where:
The photos for the front cover will either be taken outside (weather dependent)
or in the photography studio at my school. The photos for the content page will
be taken inside at school or at home. The photographs for the DPS will be taken
in the photography studio at my school.
When:
I will take my photos during the day if I decide to take any outside and also
because if I take photos in school then they will be taken in the day on a
weekday. In terms of doing it during a school day, it will be when we both have
the same free period so then we have just under an hour to get the photos taken
as professionally as I can.
