5. What is scaffolding? Scaffolding is supporting learners in various ways , enabling them to do what they cannot yet do without support. When learners achieve independence, the scaffolding is removed, and a higher goal is set.
Catalonia is a country in Spain. seven million people live there, and the population is increasing thanks to immigration.
I am from Catalonia and I know you are wondering where and what Catalonia is. Let me tell you!
As you can see there are other Autonomous governements in Spain.
If you count all Catalan speakers in Europe, there are a surprising amount. We have to cope with two main languages in our daily life. This means that we are sensitive about motivating learners to learn a third or fourth language and motivating teachers to improve their methodology.
The first thing we do to implement innovation in teachers’ daily practice is the use of “ scaffolding”.
Innovation in Catalonia consists in scaffolding in different ways: 1-Training teachers in the school choosing their main interests and what is the special linguistic project for each school; 2-Different kinds of innovative projects proposed by the Department of Education which can lead to further training practice or paid study leave. 3- Immersion programs in foreign languages for teachers, specially in summer and courses offered all year in our Official Schools of languages; 4-In general, we encourage teachers to participate in all European programs like COMENIUS, GRUNDWIG or E-TWEENING. 5- During the year, there are teacher training courses in different subjects like ICT, Action research or Coaching to improve teachers' didactic abilities. All these actions are shown on the web. There is a special one for teachers where they find all applications forms for teacher training; a wide range of innovative tools on-line and other kinds of motivating activities on different web-sites. There is a special web dedicated to innovation and it offers the most up to date projects and tasks for the class.
This is the main page of the Catalonian Education Department
This is the web with the applications for teacher training.
These are the new on-line tools.
And this is the Language Service which manages all subjects related to the Language Learning. This Service organizes working groups around different subjects like oral practice or CLIL practice. They encourgage teachers to participate in PELE programmes
And here you can see the web for innovative projects and materials.
PELE is one of the institutional programmes offered - which encourages learning through projects ,the improvement of oral skills, the use of CLIL and any innovation in education .Special training for teachers supporting some of these projects, is given in three or four sessions throughout the year. Providing support and scaffolding teachers practice while working with the projects is the main goal of the training.
Here are a few figures.
Encouraging CLIL practice is one of the main aims we have in PELE programmes…..
...because CLIL is one of the best ways to provide opportunities to improve language learning.
Furthermore, we support a special programme abroad. The materials created during these work practices are published to provide resources for CLIL teachers.
Other institutions and innovative programmes can be found in the Institutes of Science and Education.
