AR340 WEB-BASED DESIGN Materials to prepare for online • Documents: Word processing files, paper documents, certificates, etc. • Images: photos and graphics • Multimedia: video, Flash slideshows
AR340 WEB-BASED DESIGN Preparing text files • Option 1: Convert to HTML • Advantages for viewer ✓ Speed and convenience ✓ Consistent viewing experience • Disadvantages ✓ Extra work for creator ✓ Less satisfactory printing (usually)
AR340 WEB-BASED DESIGN Preparing text files (cont.) • Option 2: Convert to PDF • Advantages ✓ Superior printing ✓ Less work • Disadvantages ✓ Slows and disrupts viewer experience ✓ Forces download for many users…or • Upload to Scribd and embed
AR340 WEB-BASED DESIGN Consider both HTML and optional PDF or print stylesheet This is required for résumé
AR340 WEB-BASED DESIGN Preparing paper documents • Option 1: Rekey text into HTML • Option 2: Scan to PDF • Option 3: Scan to JPG • Reserve for documents with subtle gradations, e.g., a magazine layout • Scan to PDF, then take JPG screenshot for thumbnail
AR340 WEB-BASED DESIGN Preparing digital photos • Must be JPG format, never TIFF or PSD • Maintain file’s highest resolution till exact dimensions of displayed image are known • Reduce resolution to 72 pixels per inch before cropping and sizing • Optimize the JPG for online transfer by using Photoshop’s “Save for Web” feature
