10. STORIES ABOUT MARRIAGE
Maria and Luigi’s engagement - Il fidanzamento di Maria e Luigi
By Infant School in Campovalano
There was a time in an Abruzzese
village, called Campovalano, a
beautiful girl. Her name was Maria
and she had black hair and blue
eyes; she lived in a farm with his
father Gabriele, her mother Verina
and her two brothers. Maria went
to work every day and met a
handsome boy called Luigi with
black hair and brown eyes. Maria
and Luigi met each other every day
and they fell in love. Luigi went to
Maria’s father and asked: “Can I
see your daughter?” Gabriele
answered: “All right, boy, but you
have to behave well”. You will
come and see her only in my
presence and on Thursday”. “Ok,”
said Luigi. So, every Thursday Luigi
went to Maria’s and talked with
her for some time. After some
months, Luigi asked Gabriele: “I
would like to marry your daughter.
Can I do it?” Gabriele answered:
“You’re a good boy. You can do it”.
That evening, they celebrated their
engagement. They exchanged
some presents: Luigi gave her a
ring and Maria gave him an
embroidered handkerchief with
her initials.
The day after Maria met Luigi’s
parents. They gave her a jewel
called “La Presentosa”. Then,
Maria started to prepare the
dowry and when it was ready, it
was taken to their new house.
Finally, they got married and lived
happily forever.

11. C’era una volta in un paese abruzzese,
Campovalano, una bella ragazza. Il suo
nome era Maria e aveva i capelli neri e
Maria andava a
Gabriele rispose:” Va
bene, ragazzo, ma devi comportarti
bene. Potrai vedere mia figlia solo in mia
presenza e il giovedì”. Così, ogni giovedì
Luigi andava a casa di Maria e parlavano
un po’. Dopo alcuni mesi, Luigi chiese a
Gabriele:” Vorrei sposare sua figlia.
Posso?” Gabriele rispose:” Sei un bravo
ragazzo. Puoi farlo”. Quella sera essi

mentre erano in chiesa,
dopo lo scambio degli anelli,
fu udito un gran boato: i
tedeschi avevano fatto
saltare un ponte con una
grande bomba.
At that point, the groom and the

They ate there. When danger

marito.
macchina spesso chiesta in prestito. L’abito
