Wednesday, January 27th, 7-9pm
6 East 16th Street, 12th Floor

This workshop offers new pathways for visual artists to engage with the creative application of novel materials and technology. The aim is to encourage participants to learn values and new art practices so as they can explore new forms of expression in interactive art and design projects. During the workshop participants will develop their own interactive collage. We will use the AgIC’s circuit marker kit. No previous experience with electronics needed.
The MFA Design Technology welcomes Illustration, Fine Arts, and Communication Design students who are interested in basic circuits or an introduction to technology tools.
Bio:
Paola Guimerans is an artist, interaction designer and educator. Her artistic exploration investigates materials, techniques and processes for blending soft electronics and computation as a medium for creating expressive and personally meaningful technological arts. Through her professional artistic practices, Paola questions how to combine E-textiles and virtual media in order to explore new aesthetic alternatives and interactive means based on her drawings’ narratives. Thus, she points a critical aspect of how technology has been demystifying traditional possible methods by helping non technical people to use technology that influences conceptual and aesthetics in the recent field of New Media art with focuses on Visual Arts & Craft practices of making with electronics.

Collage,  from  the  French  word  coller,  which  means  "to  s>ck,"  is  a  visual  art   technique  that  is  accomplished  by  gluing  objects  to  a  central  backing.     The  term  collage  was  coined  by  Georges  Braque  and  Pablo  Picasso  in  1912.   The  two  arMsts  worked  together  during  that  Mme  period  and  experimented   with  collage,  using  bits  of  glued  paper  added  to  charcoal  drawings.     Wikipedia

  15. 15. •  Understand the collage as traditional fine art techniques to create a circuit that is combines aesthetics and functionality. •  Understand that LEDs arranged in a parallel configuration each receive the same amount of voltage. •  Understand that multiple LEDs within one circuit should be arranged in parallel to ensure that they all light up. GOALS
  16. 16. Step 1   Draw a parallel circuit. Circuit markers lets you draw electric circuits on paper. You just need to write a line for on stroke and the line is thick enough to place the Agic kit components ( 3V, LEDs and aluminium tape). Drawing a soft circuit with a battery and two LEDs involves nearly the same steps as a single circuit Note When creating soft circuits, it’s possible to replace traditional electronics wires for other conductive materials. For example copper tape, conductive thread or fabric
  17. 17. Step 2 Plan your circuit using a pencil. It’s necessary to know what would be the collage composition like before starting adding light and electronics components to the paper Take your time to understand the systems and remember to take into consideration the concepts about soft circuits. Note AgIC is a silver-based ink that comes in marker form. It only works on EPSON Glossy Photo Paper.
  18. 18. Step 3 The electrical connection between LEDs will be drawn with Agic silver ink. Keep in mind that when you use conductive ink electricity becomes a medium of the visual arts. You must consider how you are going to attach these elements to your mixed media artwork.
  19. 19. Step 4 After the circuit is finished, you are now ready to complete your collage. Note Making a switch. In a parallel circuit, the current will flow through the closed paths and not through the open paths. In order to achieve a parallel circuit in your drawing, you would need an open path in the conductive circuit. To do the open path in your drawing all you need is to erase that path with the AgIC Circuit Eraser.
