3. Jamestown 1607
• Searching for GOLD, paid for by the
Virginia Stock Company = workers and
upper class gentlemen.
• Not prepared for long term.
• Near a swamp w/mosquitos = malaria.
• Interaction with Powhatan Indians was
tense and unstable.
• Gold on the Brain, no one worked for food.
5. 1609 – The Starving Time
• John Smith injured, returns to England
• Still no order, people will not work for
survival of colony
• Cannibalism!
• Disease, food shortage, and Indian
attack wiped out most settlers down to
60.
7. 1619 JamestownSurvives –
BecomesVirginia
• TOBACCO Plantations – $$$CASH CROP$$$
• The settlers decide to vote for representative leaders -
Virginia House of Burgesses
(Representative Government – Self
Government )
• Indentured servants, women, and Slaves arrive.
