Reflection On My Reading Skills
Reflection Before taking this class I thought that my reading skills were exceptional, but I was
undeniably wrong about that. Now, after taking this class I can say that my reading skills have
greatly improved. I now know how to analyze works of art and find new meanings behind the
words that I read. Now, with the knowledge on how to use criticism to my advantage, all types of
literature will become wide open to me in a sense that I will be able to understand literature in
greater detail. I would certainly say that I learned more in this English class than any other
English class I have taken so far, even though it was online. I even improved on my grammar
throughout the course of these past six weeks. I learned how to write more comprehensive
paragraphs and how to write essays that stay on topic as well. Before taking this class I had not
read too many poems so I was not too familiar with quoting or citing them. Now, I easily know
how to quote a line or stanza without having to look up what to do every time. I would also say that
I am far more appreciative of literature, more than ever poetry. Before this class I did not take
poetry to seriously as I thought it was silly and for the most part nonsense that was being spat off
by crazy writers. Unbeknownst to me I found out quickly just how deep and emotional some

My Experience Of Reading
While I was in middle school in sixth grade I actually didn't know how to read books or any story
my teachers would give me. As I was reading through the passages they would give me, I noticed
that while I read a story it wouldn't stick to my head. I then told myself that it is going to be
difficult to read passages since nothing would click in my head. There were times where the
teacher would have the students and I take mini quizzes and I would hardly understand on what
the reader was talking about. I would fail the quizzes due to the reason that I never gained much
knowledge in reading. Articles and stories would always be tough for me to read since I didn't
have many experience in reading. Therefore, half of sixth grade my teacher whom was named
Ms. Soto which was an English teacher had really made reading easier for me as the semester

Reading is important in all aspects of learning. It widens vocabulary, improves imagination, and
is how we discover new things. More than anything, reading develops the mind. It is important to
begin reading with children at a very young age, to introduce new concepts and words creating a
strong basis for the future. Most small children love being read to; they find picture books fun
and enjoyable because of the animated pictures and presentation of the words. After each time
they read a book, they remember the fun pictures or words, looking forward to the next book. If a
good memory of reading is planted in a child, as they grow older not only will reading come more

This week's readings were extremely informative and useful. The focus of the readings was in
expanding the culturally pedagogy of cognitive development, information processing, and helping
students understand and construct usable knowledge. All the information covered on the different
readings has reasoned with me personally as an educator. In these videos that I chose this week I
will be focusing on the students understanding of the content. I will discuss three teaching
approaches: prior knowledge, questioning and discussion. Moreover, The three concepts
/applications that I will discuss are: Short and long term memory, writing, and cooperative

Language arts. The objective of the lesson was students would engage in a "close reading" and
develop techniques for annotating and informational text. This is definitely related to social studies.
In this subject students are require to read informational texts to support their opinions and ideas on
important relevant topics. Under the video the instructor uses strategies and theories discussed on
the readings for this week. The three strategies are prior knowledge, questioning, and discussions.

Writing has always been something I dread. It's weird because I love talking and telling stories,
but the moment I have to write it all down on paper, I become frantic. It's almost as if a horse race

Project three, Recovery is Possible: Narcotics Anonymous, hit very close to home for me. This
was a paper discussing a discourse community, the importance of such, and the niche associated
with Narcotics Anonymous. This paper meant a lot to me and I feel honored to have been able to
write about such a beautiful thing. Both of these projects needed a lot of work done, but I was

My Relationship With Reading And Writing
If I could describe my relationship with reading and writing it would most likely have to be,
improving. Of course I would assume the same happens to all students that their reading and
writing skills improve as they continue with their education. For me reading has been a passion,
so my reading skills are pretty advanced and I can say I am able to read well. In my case, being a
child of two Hispanic parents, I do have a slight accent that can get in the way and make my
reading a bit rough. Usually it is not so bad, only on certain words that either I do not know how
to properly pronounce or certain letters that my accent acts as a physical barrier where I have to
sound it out more carefully or work around my accent. While that is the #1 major setback I have

At this particular moment, I find myself in an unsure realization with my attitude to reading and
writing, even more to reading. I use to love reading, as a matter of fact, I would save my money
just to buy new books to read. It would be right to say that I enjoyed reading in earlier years, and

When I am writing narratives, I use many different characteristics to describe the characters, and
when I was watching Ted Talks and doing the chart, it made me think about the speaker's features
and how I can use them to describe my characters better. Also, I use my time efficiently I don't
fool around and talk to others. I get right to my work and complete it. I accept writing criticism
very well too, I use it to improve my writing. Another strength that I have in writing is I have
excellent spelling, and I punctuate very well. Likewise in writing, I also have my strengths in

Reading is one of my favorite pastimes. I am a tuned–in Reader, and I appreciate well written
biographies. Enjoyable reading takes my mind off school work and relaxes me. I enjoy academic
reading as well, but sometimes it is intense and requires much concentration. Moreover, I am a
tuned in reader when it comes to academic subject's such as; psychology, nutrition, health and
history. Every spare moment I have; I pick up a book or magazine, and get carried away, by the

Reading was the new outlet for my imagination and the stories I read fascinated me. They weren't
too unlike the scripts of computer games or the own stories I came up with on my own, but books

You can feed the mind as much as you want and it will never get full of reading. Sadly, I'm not the
same person that I was. I guess you could say it's part of growing up. It never really was
intentional but it's just the way how it ended up. On the other hand my attitudes toward writing

Reading is one of the main skills for learning a language. Reading is a skill that requires learning. It
has its own strategies to be mastered. Although reading skills promote at early age by the support of
parents, teachers play an important role in varying strategies of learning reading at children.
The way I learned English I learned to read English by scaffolding the long words to know which
part of speech they are. I started by reading words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs then whole pages.
At the start, I realized the mistake I was making by stopping at each difficult word to translate. This

read to understand your reading. Deconstructing the material of reading is a direct purpose of

is being read. The third strategy is summarizing. I used to give the reading passage again but in my
own words to make sure to what extent I mastered it. This develops my understanding of the reading
material. Then I answer reading questions and try to get answers from my summary and from the
original reading material to make sure my summary lacks nothing.
Summarizing makes me understand what I am reading using a simpler language. The fourth strategy
to learn English reading is discussing. I used to discuss what I read which an adult or a teacher.
Discussing my reading will add assurance and full understanding of it. It will make me more able
to apply what I read in life through discussing and analyzing looking for positive and negative
aspects in the reading passage. Discussion based reading can also be tested through answering
questions related to the passage if reading and commenting on them. The fifth strategy is extracting.

day like the rest of my classmates did on their birthdays. I guess I didn't get to wear the crown
because it was the first day of school. But besides that, kindergarten was a really great year. In the
mornings we'd go around the classroom to different stations and play different games, then we'd go

I also went through a phase in junior high where I bought non–fiction diaries of teenagers that
struggled through different problems. Those always kept me entertained and they were the type
of books that I could never put down. Reading was never something that I just did in school. I did
it whenever we had free time in class, after school, and at night before bed. It was always one of
my hobbies. I also found writing very interesting. I enjoyed writing papers for all of my English
classes. Every one was a little different and every year I truly believe that I became a better writer.
I learned different ways to write and I believe that I always met my teacher's expectations in my
papers. I remember in fifth grade I had to write my first autobiography. That was the only time
until now that I got to write entirely about myself. It's a project that I'll never forget. My teacher
gave us about a month to write this paper and put a book together. The book consisted of my paper
and pictures all glued to construction paper. In that autobiography I wrote about my time growing
up, my family, my friends, my hobbies, etc. My parents still have that book. It was such an
impacting project. It was really nice to reflect on my time growing up and the things I enjoyed.
When I was eight years old, I learned how to play the piano. Even though reading music is different

Reflective Essay
As far as writing is concerned, it has never been a greater pleasure of mine than to write about
something. This semester has provided me with a bundle of opportunities to write about a plethora
of topics which I would not even have considered on second thoughts otherwise. The aim of this
reflective essay is to discuss my Literacy Narrative "Experience in Reading and Writing". I decided to
reflect on this essay as it shows my learning path of the English language. This reflection will
analyze the learning process I went through and how it was applied. The process of learning a
language is to be able to understand, read, write and speak it effectively in order to enable
communication. I will also discuss the obstacles that I faced and how I came through from it
with proper guidance. The essay is to reflect on my role as a student, guided by peers and guides
in search of verbosity. Moreover, the essay is proof of how far I have come from having ideas all
over the place and not making sense. This essay shows that I can frame my thought coherently and
provide a central topic around which everything could be related to. I believe that the essay would
be inspiring and can help others understand that language is no barrier if you work on it and shall
become one of the most important tools in life.
Most of the time when I plan on learning something, it so happens that I cannot focus on one
single idea or be able to link a group of ideas together. This has for most parts prevented me from
taking an initiative to write about it. Writing something proved challenging as whatever I wrote had
to be structurally and grammatically correct. Consequently, the pressure of managing these
problems made it difficult to have a meaningful subject that could be rhetorically satisfactory. This
essay introduces the issue initially as tries to put in the factors that were responsible for it. The
primary audience for this essay would be myself and my instructor, so the main aim was to
understand my own triumphs and tribulations this semester. While it is true that others might read
