  1. Welcome to Smith Middle School’s PTA Presentation; My name is Hillary Cribbs and I am the principal here at Smith Middle School. This evening we will be looking at our FCAT data from the past five years for reading, math and writing. We will be making observations, comparing ourselves to district averages, looking at our achievements and areas that need improvement. Again, welcome and I hope you find this presentation and enjoyable, but more importantly beneficial.
  2. Before we begin to look at data, I want you to keep on Learning Goals for the 2012 year in mind. These AMO targets were provided to us by the State of Florida and were based off the past scores. Please take a moment to read these over.
  3. The first set of data is our school’s Reading FCAT Data from the past five years. When observing please note the legend to assistance in your understanding of the data. This legend can be applied for the next couple of slides. One observation to note when looking at this data is 6th grade was at its highest proficiency in five years. Whereas 7th and 8th grade reading proficiency declined from 2010 to 2011. You’ll also notice that 8th grade reading proficiency is below the 50% margin. We will be looking at possible causes and solutions for these decreased proficiencies in 7th and 8th grade in the coming slides.
  4. Our next set of data is our school’s Math FCAT data from the past five years. One observation is that 7th grade math was at its highest proficiency in five years in 2011, though in the previous 4 years has struggled to be at the 50% mark. Whereas 8th grade declined in math proficiency in 2011, and in the past five years has been below 50% in 4 out of the 5 years. Though,6th grade math proficiency has varied in the past five years, in all five years it has stayed above 50%.
  5. This is our final set of school based data. It shows the proficiency levels of our 8th graders on FCAT writes for the past 5 years. One observation is 8th grade FCAT Writes proficiency has increased by 25% when comparingthe years 2007 and 2011. However, the proficiency dropped from 2010 to 2011. We will be visiting plausible causes and solutions in the coming minutes.
  6. The next couple of data sets that we will be referring to, will compare our school profiencies levels to that of our Levy County District for the past 5 years. Again, continue to make observations as we compare these percentages. When looking at these data sets, notice the legend has changed. Please reference the new legend to clarify interpretation of the graph. 6th grade reading data is our current slide. Note both Smith Middle School and the Levy County District maintained proficiencies above the 50% mark. However, our school has fallen short of the district percentages for the past 5 years. We have recently begun collaborating with other middle schools in our district to find out what they are to doing to raise student achievement. Through this collaboration we discovered that our Smith Middle 6th graders, are coming in with lower reading fluencies and comprehension skills than other schools in our district. This might be a cause for our data falling below the district percentages for 6th grade reading. We now need to collaborate with our local elementary schools to improve upon of what can be done prior to our 6th graders arriving at our school. However, we also need to focus on what we can do. Challenge students with fluency timing competitions, provide students with only grade appropriate materials, provide tutoring after school and possible morning help, challenge our gifted and so on. With all that said we have AWESOME things going on in our 6th grade reading classes! For example, Mrs. Clark’s class just completed a Comprehensive Instructional Sequence lesson that required students to engage in text talks about deep vocabulary words, to write about the text through directed note taking and extend their thinking through higher order questions. She had awesome results in recent assessment. And there are many more examples of exemplar things occurring in sixth grade reading- complex text activities, accelerated reader, drama club, and much more. Way to go sixth grade reading team!! Parents, if you have any other ideas of how we might improve our 6th grade reading please share.
  7. Again we are comparing our scores for reading to our district scores. Now we are looking at 7th grade data for FCAT reading. We have fallen short of the district percentages every year for the past five years. However, we are starting to really close the gap, note that past 4 years. Also, in the past 4 years both our very SMS 7th graders and the district average had proficiencies above the 50% margin. Like our 6th grade, great things are happening in 7th grade, such as colloborative groupings within classrooms, book in a bag projects and such that promote the reading of novels and more complex text, Vocab debates, and even centers in our 7th grade reading classrooms! I am sure I am missing some other incredible achievements, but this team is making strides. However, after looking at our parent surveys from the past five years, it seems as 7th graders they lack the most at home support. A lot of our students come in unprepared for class, having not completed their homework. Homework is an extension of the school day and a very vital part of student achievement. Maybe a homework help room would be beneficial to our seventh graders. Maybe even a parent voluteer could help us manage it. This would not only benefit in the area of reading but math as well. Any ideas? T
  8. If you notice now we are referring to 8th grade reading scores for FCAT for the past 5 years. Notice that we have again fallen below the district for the past five years. In 2010, we closed the gap tremendously and then in 2011 the gap widened again. Our 8th grade reading team recently met with a sister middle school nearby that had reading proficiency scores above the district level. When questioned about what they did to raise their proficieny they simply answered “ We read!” In astonishment, we were at first like, “we read” but as the conversation progressed the 8th grade teachers at this exemplary middle school expressed that they spent all of the reading block engaged in a text. We try to accomplish so much in a reading block that sometimes the thing that is lost is actually reading! Our 8th grade reading team has recently voiced a plan about new classroom management techniques that will help them make better use of their time, along with deciding what was most important for our 8th graders. Much collaboration has occurred between our grade levels to ensure students will be arriving at our “end zone” of 8th grade prepared.
  9. We are going to change up our presentation style a tad and look at all data for math for 6th 7th and 8th and then reflect and share out accomplishments and plans for improvement. I am going to give you a few moments to look and observe the data on the next 3 slides. At the conclusion of the 8th grade Math FCAT slide we will stop to debrief. As you scanned through the Math FCAT slides, what stuck out to you? A few things stuck out to me. Our 6th grade math proficiency is currently above our district and above the 60% margin! Yeah! We have been right at or above the district average profciency for the past 5 years. Our sixth graders have Math Moments ever morning when they arrive, it’s where they have to solve a given word problem using multiple stratgies. Students then share out their findings and prove their answers. Peers learn from peers! Also, after comparing to our district level, students are coming into 6th grade with their multiplication and division facts memorized from our local elementary schools. I know after speaking to the principal at Williston Elementary, she informed their xtra math online program is part of their success story with memorization of those facts! We are so appreciative and will continue to work with our sister schools.
  10. When looking at 7th grade math prof. we are also above the district average on Math FCAT! Way to go team! We closed a big gap from 2010 to 2011. We can attritute a lot of success to our 6th grade instruction, but also our elementary school instruction. It is a ripple effect! And a good one at that! Our 7th graders this past year also started an online program in the computer lab, once week, to increase their proficiency when solving word problems. Within this program students can highlight key components, drag parts of problems around, use visuals to aid in solving, etc. Our students have really taken off with this. I only expect our scores to soar higher next year! We will be continuing this program, however, when reflecting back to reading, students to occasionally struggle to get their homework done, due to no help at home. So a homework help room would also benefit math proficiency as well. Do I have a parent volunteer yet? Just kidding, I will give some time to think about it and look at your schedules.
  11. When reflecting upon the 8th grade data, you will notice that we were above the district level in 2010 though just above the 50% mark, but fell below their level of proficiency in 2011 to 40%. What caused the drop? One thing, I noted upon reflecting on 2011 was that our 8th grade math blocks not areas where we were able to provide consistent push in help for our bottom quartile students and ESE population. This primarily due to scheduling and also funding, whereas our 6th and 7th grade math blocks attained outside assistance, along with a large population of parent volunteers. We are always looking for volunteers, it’s not just for elementary schools! Our students need more one on one assistance and sometimes we just don’t have the man power. I encourage you, especially if you have an 8th grader, sign up to be a classroom volunteer. We can use you! Whether its working one on one with students increase proficiency or if its creating graphics and manipulatives needed to create engaged learning situations. Just like Uncle Same needs you……Smith Middle Needs you!
  12. Our last set of comparisons, is to look at 8th grade FCAT Writes data from the past five years. The great news is we were almost to 70% proficient in the year 2011! That’s awesome and that’s with the proficiency level being raised to 3.5. However, we are falling below our district’s average. Again, we have collaborated with other middle schools in our district to question them about the strategies they are using. Most of them mentioned hosting a writing club. Students were chosen based on a write score prompt given at the beginning of the year, students that scored at a level 1, 2, or 3 were invited to attend this club. Their 8th grade writing teams were then able to divide into groups of 1s, 2s, and 3s and focus on students areas of need. We are definitely going to be implementing this in the coming year. We will also continue implementing our speech writing contests, writing to texts, using our Writer’s in Control program and many more things.
  13. We are striving to have the Essential 5 at our school this school year! We are creating new team planning periods for our teachers to meet essential, keeping up with your child and what’s going at school will help us with essential 3, making sure our classroom environments are warm and welcoming and build students up to believe they can succeed with cover essential 4, and providing students with rigorous instruction grouped with appropriate and engaging materials will help us meet essential 5. I am going try my best to meet essential. I know it starts with me. You have my word, no one will work harder to help your students achieve than me. I will be visible, in and out classrooms and plan on keeping myself aware of what goes on on this campus. In reference to being an effective leader, I visited the Florida School leaders website. An interesting article I read provided high effect strategies for both teachers and administrators. To name a few……Teachers are to include:Leaders are to:
  14. Read first two lines. Throughout the year you will receive a variety of handouts and packets of information regarding our work with the standards. You can also view the standards in classroom newsletters and school newsletters, where a gist be placed about each one we are currently addressing in our classrooms. You can also find the standards on classroom websites and on the student learning maps that your child has for each unit of study.
  15. In closing, please use any of these communication and informational tools to ask questions, express concerns and learn more about what you have heard addressed tonight.
