1. Are you male or female?
I wanted to aim my magazine for both
males and females so I tried to ask a fairly
equal number of each. It could have been
better if I asked an equal number of males
and females, but I didn’t want any of the
results in my questionnaire to be planned
so I just handed out my questionnaire
randomly. The information I have gathered
from this question is very useful since it
will help me make my future decisions
unbiased and cater them to both genders.

2. How old are you?
My target audience’s age range is
between 16-30 years-old so I have
16
conducted my questionnaire on
14
people within that age range to help 12
in my research. Asking this question
10
is very useful for it will ensure that I
8
have the correct information my
6
target audience are looking
4
for, therefore allowing me to make
2
my music magazine suit them. I have

mainly asked people who were 16-25
years-old, which is still helps me with
my research, however it could have been better if I asked a more equal number of
people from each age range I have listed, because having one very dominant age
range can lead to my magazine being more biased to that specific age range.
3. Which of the following colours would
you associate most with the rock
genre?
I asked this question because I wanted
to know what colours my target
audience would think suited rock music.
The information I have gathered is quite
useful because it reinforced some of the
colours I have already planned to use
and gave me suggestions for other
relevant colours I could use in my
magazine. I already predicted that black
will be a very popular colour and
according to these results, so are
white, red and yellow.

4. What sort of content would you like to
see in a rock music magazine?
I have asked this question because
the information I have gathered
from it will help me think of ideas
for coverlines and articles that I can
put on my front cover and contents
page. The information I have
gathered shows quite an equal
interest for all the available choices
with one two people choosing
“Other” and writing about events
and tour dates. This question has
been very useful because I was
quite unsure on what content I
should have in my magazine and
what sort of content will appeal
more to my target audience.

5. How often do you buy magazines?
Although I have initially said that I
9
wanted to make a weekly
8
magazine, I have asked this question
7
to see what other publication
6
frequencies are popular among my
5
target readership. I’ve included the
4
option “Never” because some of the 3
people who fill out my questionnaire 2
1
might not usually buy magazines.

decide my magazine’s frequency, but
could help me price my magazine because some of the people I asked said they never
buy magazines because they can often become expensive. I will take into
consideration the information I have gathered here when I am planning my
magazine, however there are other factors that could change it, eg. the content, issue
size, etc.
6. What other rock magazines do you
already read?
I have asked this question because I
12
wanted to find out which of the
other magazines already out there in 10
the market are popular among my
8
target audience. This information
will allow me to use inspiration from 6
those magazines and make
4
comparisons between my magazine
2
and their magazines. Like the
0
question about the audience’s

age, the results here show that one
of options is evidently more famous than the others. This could be because I
the
haven’t asked a wide enough range of people, or it could just be because this
magazine is very popular; nevertheless it still means that I need to be careful when
planning my magazine later on for it could seem very identical to Kerrang.
7. How much are you willing to spend on
a music magazine?
I have asked this question because I
wanted to know how much my target
audience was willing to spend on a
music magazine. Even though I have
£1.00-£2.00
originally priced my magazine at
£2.01-£3.00
£2.99, I am willing to adjust the price
£3.01-£4.00
to cater my target audience. I have
Over £4.00
also found this question perticularly
useful because quite a few of the
people I have asked said that they
never buy magazines, yet still gave a
price that they are willing to spend on one. The results of this question show that
most of my target audience are willing to spend around £2.01-£3.00 which
perfectly fits my initial price of £2.99.
8. Which of the following sub-genres of
rock do you like the most?
I wanted to make my magazine a
versatile rock magazine where it
covers quite a wide range of subgenres. Restricting my audience’s
available options makes it easier for
me to get a more specific answer to
my question. For example, if I had
just asked them to list the sub-genres
of rock that they liked, I would have
ended up with a very wide range of
answers which would not be very
helpful in my research.

9. Out of the following words, which one
do you think most suits a name for a
rock magazine?
I have asked this question because I
was struggling thinking of a name for
my magazine. This question allows
my target audience to choose words
which they associate most with rock
and I can then take the results into
consideration when thinking of a
name for my magazine. I have listed
a few words which I think would
make a good title for a rock magazine
and the results show quite an equal
interest in all of the choices which
makes me think that it might be a
good idea to choose any of the
words or use more than one of the
words I have listed.

10. Which of the following fonts would
you associate most with the rock
genre?
I have asked this question because I
16
wanted to see which sort of fonts my
14
target audience preferred. This
12
information is useful because it can
10
help me decide which fonts I should
8
use for my magazine. I will not
6
strictly stick to these specific fonts;
4
however I will be using similar

looking fonts. For example, Font 1 is

a sans-serif font, in all capitals and

slightly distressed and Font 3 is quite
a pop-punk font (similar to Jamie Reid’s work in the 70s pop-punk era), in all capitals
and also slightly distressed. By identifying the similar qualities and features these fonts
have, I can take them into consideration when I am looking for the fonts I will use in my
magazine.
