The Pearl is a novella by John Steinbeck about a poor family in Mexico. Kino finds a large pearl that he hopes will improve his family's life, but its discovery brings them misfortune, as others seek to steal the pearl. Despite trying to get help from the doctor for their son's scorpion sting, he refuses due to their poverty. After finding the pearl, evil forces pursue the family and their son is ultimately killed, demonstrating how greed can destroy lives.
