Use lines to represent the surface, edge and
contours of an object.
Drawings, photographs, slides, transparencies,
and sketches are all forms of graphic
communication.
The language is known as drawing or drafting
A drawing can be done using freehand,
instruments or computer.
Exercise
Draw the direction from you classroom (current) to
your dormitory using freehand sketch.

Drawing
a tool used by engineers and industrial designers
to design a product, solve a problem, or produce
a product
a graphic representation of an idea, a concept or
an entity which actually or potentially exists in
life
Engineering
It stems from the Latin โ€œingenerareโ€, meaning โ€œto
createโ€.

Two divisions of drawings
technical drawing communicate the same message,
whereas an artistic drawing interpreted differently
by everyone who sees it.
Technical Drawing
the art and science of describing structures and
structural details completely and accurately by
graphical means
controlled by accepted standards, drawing
โ€conventionsโ€ and projection techniques.
Role of Engineering Drawing
The ability to read drawing is the most important
requirement of all technical people in any profession
Some of the applications are: building drawing for
civil engineers, machine drawing for mechanical
engineers, circuit diagrams for electrical and
electronics engineers, computer graphics for one and
all. In general, engineering drawing,
Ability to read and prepare engineering drawings.
Ability to make free - hand sketching of objects.

Lettering and Drawing Sheet
Lettering in Engineering drawing is used to:
To communicate non graphic information
As a substitute for graphic information
Thus it must be written with:
Legible: shape, space between letters and words
Uniformity: size and line thickness

A path between two points (straight or curved)
A moving point
Geometric figure that has only one dimension:
Length.
Types of lines
The meaning of each line on a technical drawing
is indicated by its width (thick or thin) and its
particular line style.
To make your drawings easy to read, make the
contrast between thick and thin lines distinct.
Thick lines (0.6 mm) should be twice the width of
thin lines (0.3 mm)
Meaning of lines
Visible (Object) lines: thick lines represent
features that can be seen in the current view.
Hidden lines: represent features that can not be
seen in the current view. Drawn approximately 3
mm long with a space of 1.0 mm left between
each dash.
Center line: represent symmetry, path of
motion, centers of circles. Long dash (20 โˆ’ 40
mm) and short dash (3 mm)
Dimension and Extension lines: indicates the
sizes and location of features on a drawing
Section lines:indicates where the cutting plane
cuts the material
Cutting plane lines: used to indicate the
location of the cutting of cutting plane in the
process of sectioning.
Break lines: used to break out sections for
clarity or for shortening apart.
Phantom lines: thin lines composed of long
dashes alternating with pairs of short dashes.
Show alternating positions, repeated details.
Exercise: Identify the type of line represented by
each number
Geometric construction: Objectives
Identify different types of plane geometry and
their basic elements;
Construct different types of geometrical figures;
Apply methods and rules of construction for
different types of geometrical shapes.
4H to 6H leads produce very lightweight lines.
These lines need not necessarily be erased when
the construction is completed.
Purpose in geometric construction
To accurately develop plane geometric shapes ranging
from squares, triangles, and three dimensional
cylinders to complex irregular curves and ellipses.
1. Triangles
A. Constructing any traingle given 3 sides (AB,
AC, BC)
1 Draw line AB.
2 With a center at A and radius
AC, draw an arc.
3 With center at B and radius
BC, draw another arc that cut
the previous arc at C.
4 Connect point C to A and B.
B. Constructing any triangle given 2 sides (AB
and AC) and included angle
1 Draw the base line AB
2 Draw line AD at an
angle of ฮธ from AB, using
any proper instrument
3 A as a center and AC as
a radius, strike an arc on
AD to get point C
4 Connect C to B. ABC is
the required triangle
2. Constructing a regular pentagon in
a given circumscribing circle
Draw horizontal diameter AB and vertical
diameter CD intersecting at O.
Draw the circle with radius equal to half of AB.
Construct the midpoint of OB and mark as E.
With E as a center and radius equal to CE, strike
the arc CF to intersect AB at F.
With C as a center and CF as a radius, strike the
arc FG to intersect the circle at G
Set a compass to GC and lay off this interval
from C around the circle.
Connect the points of intersection

Draw a regular pentagon whose circumscribed circle is
60mm diameter
3. Constructing a regular hexagon in a
given circumscribing circle
1 Draw diameters AB
and CD intersecting
at O.
2 OB as radius, draw
the circle.
3 Starting from C and
with radius OB, lay
off points around the
circle.
4 Connect the points.
4. Constructing any regular polygon
with a given length of side
(approximate method)
1 Draw the given side AB.
2 With radius equal to AB and centers at A and B
draw arcs that intersect at point 6.
3 Draw a perpendicular to line AB through point 6
and extend it upward beyond point 6.
4 Draw 45ยฐ line from either A or B to intersect the
perpendicular line at point 4.

1 Bisect the distance 4-6 to locate point 5.
2 Step up (lay off) distance equal to 5-6 beyond
point 6 to get points 7, 8, 9. . . .
3 With center at 8 and radius 8-A or 8-B, draw a
circle that will inscribe the polygon.
4 Adjust your compass to AB and divide the circle
into eight equal parts and connect the division
points to complete the construction of the regular
polygon (in this case octagon).

5. Circles and Tangents
5.1 Drawing a circle through three noncollinear
points A, B and C
1 Mark any three points
and connect them.
2 Draw the perpendicular
bisectors of both AB and
BC to intersect at O.
3 With O as centers and
radius OA, draw the
required circle.
5.2 Constructing a line tangent to a circle
through an external point
1 Draw a circle and locate given point P.
2 Construct the center O of the circle.
3 Connect OP
4 Locate point M by constructing the midpoint of
OP.
5 With M as a center and radius OM, draw an arc
to intersect the circle at point of tangency T1 and
T2.
6 Connect T1 to P and T2 to P
5.3 Constructing tangent line to two circles of
different size: where R is greater than r
1 Draw two given circles with center points O and Oโ€™.
2 Connect the center point of the circles with line OOโ€™.
3 Construct midpoint C of line OOโ€™.
4 With C as a center and radius OC, draw a semicircle
through OOโ€™.
5 With Oโ€™ as a center and radii R-r and R+r, strike arcs that
intersect the semicircle on OOโ€™ at D and E respectively.
6 Draw Oโ€™D to intersect circle Oโ€™ at F and similarly draw
Oโ€™E to intersect circle Oโ€™ at G.
7 Through center O, draw OH parallel to Oโ€™F and OK
parallel to Oโ€™G.
5.4 Constructing internal and enclosing tangent
arcs of radii R and Rโ€™ respectively to two circles
of radii R1 and R2
1 Draw two given circles with radii R1 and R2 and
centers O and Oโ€™ respectively.
2 With O as a center and radii R+R1 and Rโ€™-R1,
strike two arcs as shown in the figure.
3 With Oโ€™ as a center and radii R+R2 and Rโ€™-R2,
strike two arcs intersecting the previous arcs at
points P and Pโ€™. P and Pโ€™ are the centers of the
tangent arcs.
4 With P and Pโ€™ as centers and corresponding radii
R and Rโ€™ respectively, draw the tangents.
Exercise
Draw two circles whose radii are 30 mm and 20 mm
with centers 54 mm apart. Draw an arc of 70 mm
radius tangent to upper sides of circles and enclose
them.
6. Construction of an ellipse
An ellipse is the locus of all co-planar points, the sum
of whose distances from two fixed points (foci) is
constant.
The longer axis of an ellipse is called major axis
(diameter) and the shorter axis is called minor axis
(diameter).
An ellipse is constructed in several methods, few
of which are
1 Four-center method (an approximate method)
2 Concentric circles method
3 Parallelogram or conjugate diameter method.
Constructing ellipse by four-center method
1 Draw the major axis AB and the minor axis CD intersecting
at O. Connect the end points of the two axes AD.
2 With radius OA and center O, strike an arc to intersect the
extension of minor axis at E.
3 With radius DE and Center on D, mark off point F. Note
AF=AO โ€“ DO and OA=OD+DE.
4 Draw perpendicular bisector of AF and extend it to
intersect the major axis at K and the minor axis at H.
5 With a divider or compass mark off OM equal to OK, and
OL equal to OH.
6 With H as a center and radius equal to HD, draw the
bottom arc between TT. With L as a center and same
radius HD, draw the top arc between TT.
7 With M as a center and radius equal to MB, draw the right
side end arc between TT. repeat for left-side with center K.
Exercise
Draw an ellipse whose axis is 102mm long
(horizontally and whose minor axis is 64mm long,
using four-center method.

Types of lines The meaning of each line on a technical drawing is indicated by its width (thick or thin) and its particular line style. To make your drawings easy to read, make the contrast between thick and thin lines distinct. Thick lines (0.6 mm) should be twice the width of thin lines (0.3 mm)

  • 16. Meaning of lines Visible (Object) lines: thick lines represent features that can be seen in the current view. Hidden lines: represent features that can not be seen in the current view. Drawn approximately 3 mm long with a space of 1.0 mm left between each dash. Center line: represent symmetry, path of motion, centers of circles. Long dash (20 โˆ’ 40 mm) and short dash (3 mm) Dimension and Extension lines: indicates the sizes and location of features on a drawing Section lines:indicates where the cutting plane cuts the material

Phantom lines: thin lines composed of long dashes alternating with pairs of short dashes. Show alternating positions, repeated details.

Geometric construction: Objectives Identify different types of plane geometry and their basic elements; Construct different types of geometrical figures; Apply methods and rules of construction for different types of geometrical shapes. 4H to 6H leads produce very lightweight lines. These lines need not necessarily be erased when the construction is completed.   • 36. 6. Construction of an ellipse An ellipse is the locus of all co-planar points, the sum of whose distances from two fixed points (foci) is constant. The longer axis of an ellipse is called major axis (diameter) and the shorter axis is called minor axis (diameter). An ellipse is constructed in several methods, few of which are 1 Four-center method (an approximate method) 2 Concentric circles method 3 Parallelogram or conjugate diameter method.

Connect the end points of the two axes AD. 2 With radius OA and center O, strike an arc to intersect the extension of minor axis at E. 3 With radius DE and Center on D, mark off point F. Note AF=AO โ€“ DO and OA=OD+DE. 4 Draw perpendicular bisector of AF and extend it to intersect the major axis at K and the minor axis at H. 5 With a divider or compass mark off OM equal to OK, and OL equal to OH. 6 With H as a center and radius equal to HD, draw the bottom arc between TT. With L as a center and same radius HD, draw the top arc between TT. 7 With M as a center and radius equal to MB, draw the right side end arc between TT. repeat for left-side with center K.
