2. Mission
Research, Design & Engineering of complex systems ( -level)
for Health, Security and Environment
using micro- and technologies
Fostering research and crossbreeding of hardware and software technologies
in the areas of implantable, wearable & ambient systems
Convergence of technologies in these areas: fertile ground for innovation
• Develop new markets
• Improve living standards
• Better the quality of health, security & environment systems
• Foster a vision of engineering with social objectives
• Promote related educationl programs

16. Nano-Tera.ch future evolution
• Pending governmental approval, Nano-Tera.ch is articulated in 3 phases:
– First phase 2008-2011:
• Research and develop enabling technologies and experimental
systems
– Second phase: 2012-2016:
• Integrate new technologies into systems, demonstrating the
possibilities of new products and markets
– Third phase: 2017-2020:
• Consolidation of results and deliverables of those projects that
have a strong societal and industrial impact
• The second phase is 5-year long due to federal budget realignment
– Still funding is approved in two stages (2011 and 2012)
– The effective start date for Nano-Tera.ch was delayed by 18 months
21
17. Broad objectives for phase 2
• Continued focus on health, security and environment
– With an extension to smart energy
• Consolidation of the research efforts
– Build bridges among the pinnacles of excellence
• Achieve program cohesion
– Respond to Swiss societal and industrial needs
22
18. • Calls will address both interdisciplinary projects as well as specific hot
areas within the research space
23
19. November 2010: Visit to China
• Swiss delegation visits 5 Chinese institutions
– Under the initiative of Prof. Boi Faltings (EPFL)
– With the support of Swissnex
– Presenting Nano-Tera.ch and MICS activities.
