Is it good or bad that we are so dependent on technology?
People can hardly imagine their lives without modern
technologies nowadays. We are used to the fact that all our
phones and important contacts are recorded in phones,
computers, laptops, and other portable gadgets. We fully rely on
technology, we might be depending on it. Calculate how many
computers, monitors, phones you have at home! A lot of? There
are probably more phones than the number of people in your
family, and everyone probably has a computer. These devices
have become an important part of our life. Moreover, almost
every day either a new technology is being invented or an old
one is being improved.
Different people appreciate new inventions differently. Some
suppose that sophisticated gadgets are really useful and
necessary, while others find them absolutely awful as they
influence people badly and called it an addiction. As for me, I
am pretty sure that gadgets make people's lives easier.
Firstly, they do all kinds of dirty and hard work and save a lot
of time. Secondly, people won't be to stop and will work more
on new innovations, to helps people in different spheres. For
instance, put computer programs into the phone or make robots
likeness to people for getting extra help.
According to the article ”Meet Zora, the Robot Caregiver” By
ADAM SATARIANO, ELIAN PELTIER, and DMITRY
KOSTYUKOV. It is one of the good examples of do not be
scared and does not think that we may be addicted to
technology. Zora is an experimental robot that helps change
care for elderly patients. ” When Zora arrived at this nursing
facility an hour outside Paris, a strange thing began happening:
Many patients developed an emotional attachment, treating it
like a baby, holding and cooing, giving it kisses on the head”
from the article ”Meet Zora, the Robot Caregiver” By ADAM
SATARIANO, ELIAN PELTIER, and DMITRY KOSTYUKOV.
I would like to repeat the sentence ”Many patients developed an
emotional attachment, treating it like a baby, holding and
cooing, giving it kisses on the head” because it sounds very
joyful and people may have a chance to be happy again and
share their love to someone else such as Zora. All nursing can
control the actions and communication of Zora from a laptop
and it's useful to remind what is scheduled for patients and
furthermore takes more care of individuals to all patients.
However, patients have told the robot things about their health
they wouldn’t share with doctors. It means patients trust more
to robots than to people since people may hurt or offend hardly
and the patient won't trust them. The robots have artificial
intelligence and all action is under control, so why it's bad to
be addicted to technology?
Furthermore, everybody has a good chance to be happy and
enjoy their lives. All new technologies, innovations, programs
were made to make life easier. In the present day, a lot of
people have a relationship with robots and feel very happy with
them. According to the article ”Do you take this robot…” by
Alex William ” This comes quickly on the heels of growing
worldwide acceptance of gay, trans and bisexual people. Now
you may describe yourself as polyamorous or demisexual —
that last one is people who only feel sexual attraction in close
emotional relationships. Perhaps you best identify as aromantic
(that’s people who don’t feel romance) or sociosexual (that’s a
primary attraction to people of no, or multiple, or complex
genders).” All people may have the right to be free and can
choose what they want to be or, with who they want to be. So
why people may choose their gender, but not choosing their
relationship? People want to be happy and not waiting for their
single life to be what others want.
Another area involves information technology is education.
The schools began to start electronic diaries of students, with
the help of which parents learn about their child's performance.
In universities and other educational institutions, teachers are
increasingly practicing throwing away lectures on electronic
media, as well as practicing independent study of topics. Thus,
the need to attend lectures is reduced. By submitting a term
paper or diploma paper for verification, a student can simply
drop his work to the teacher by e-mail, while reducing the time
spent on a trip to the place of study and the time of the teacher:
he can check the work at a convenient time and send it to the
student with instructions for completion . In principle, the
difference between full-time and part-time forms of education is
reduced: in both cases, students study topics on their own. It is
also worth noting the importance of distance learning. People
with disabilities have a chance to get an education, to
developmentally.
Furthermore, students may have fun to study and share their
thoughts in school by using social media such as Instagram,
snap chat or tick-tock. According to the article "High Schools to
TikTok: We’re Catching Feelings" by The New York
Times“There’s a lot more than just funny videos,” Kaylani
Heisler said. “I see countless ways to take notes, get organized.
I see chemistry study aids. Students occasionally involve their
teachers in TikTok stunts, and many educators have set up their
accounts. Sarah Jacobs, a physics teacher at San Jose High
School in California, said some of her students made TikToks
explaining Newton’s Laws for extra credit last year." It makes
the teacher closer to the students and moreover to understand
students, their moods, their interest and be connected with
them.
In my opinion, how much we will be dependent on the
computer - it may determine on us. Person himself should
determine what to spend time on,how to live life. And if you
use technology and other devices only for useful purposes and
in moderation - life will become easier not only for us, but for
future generations, and they will not have to suffer from our
carelessness and laziness.
Option 2:Identify a topic that came up in the class readings and
use a question to bring attention to a way in which it is an issue.
Develop your answer to the question in the body of the essay.
Be clear about your point of view from the start; in other words,
have a thesis statement that gives your answer to the question
you pose. In the body of the essay, use counterargument
strategy to deal with challenges to or concerns with your thesis
and supporting ideas. In addition to using one or more of the
articles assigned in class, you are required to use as a source
ONE article that you find in the New York Times. Finally,
attach a Works Cited page that lists the texts cited in the essay.
Possible topics include but are not limited to technology and
identity, technology and violence, technology and privacy,
technology and ethics, technology and education, technology
and the environment, technology and justice, technology and
language, technology and race, technology and mental or
physical health, technology and class, technology and freedom,
or technology and the future.
English 12: Freshman Writing I
Should we stop using or developing technology in one day?
Technology is a major part of human life to the point that
people are hard to imagine their lives without machines. Every
day either a new gadget is invented or an old one is improved.
Different people appreciate new inventions differently. Some
suppose that sophisticated gadgets are really useful and
necessary, while others have a technophobe in them and find
absolutely awful and dangerous for a human. As for me, I am
more on the technophile side, which is pretty sure that
technology is made for helping and for making easy life.
Every morning when waking up, the first thing I do is I’m
taking my phone and check social media, watch some movie I’m
using my iPad, do my homework I’m using my computer, listen
to news or music in the car, I'd turn on a radio. Therefore very
hard to see life in 2019 without technology. While people are
depending on technology and I would like to say, we are more
on control of technology.
The gadgets are the big word for most everyone who lives
today, every day scientists are developing or improving
technology for human life and trying to interact with people in
exactly that way. Furthermore, the device’s achievement are
doing all kinds of hard and dirty work of people, for saving time
and make work easier. For example, a computer disk can
contain the same amount of information as several thick books.
Since a person will not even waste that much time to find exact
information in the library or in other resources. It’s very
interesting, that machines can help people in different spheres
and not only in searching for information. According to the New
York Times, by Brian X Chen “ Devices that will invade your
life in 2019(and what's overhyped)”. , he said that c
Try only imagine that we are opening our eyes in the new
world, where it has the answers for difficult questions, such as a
get to know a weather for all week or find a location and get
direction on it, listen or watch what you want and it’s not will
take a lot of time to find it, but people will have a one problem
working with a device is you have to learn their language, as
Frank Gillett, according to The New York Times, by Brian X.
Chen said, “we still to learn their language, such as they have
not learned our language”. It's true because as many answers the
technology will have, it’s not a human and it cant have logical
thought, or any feeling. Therefore is harder to understanding all
steps for some people because devices are not at that time where
they can learn our language and think like people.
However, opponents of this point of view are definitely sure
that gadgets affect people negatively. But it also depends on a
person’s age, because most of them who have a technophobe is
exactly that people who got a part of their life without
interactions of the technology, and it’s making their knowledge
and worldview in a different way. So they see in another way
where is technological interaction brings only bad things for
human life. People become lazy and disorganized. They just
expect their latest gadgets to do everything instead of them.
Furthermore, more and more people are becoming addicted to
their modern gadgets, for instance, computers, TVs or mobile
phones. While the people are making their rules, knows their
close actions and future, where technology will d all of their
work. According to the article ”The judgment of Thamus” , it
says“it should surprise no one that such people, forming as they
do a new knowledge monopoly, should cheer themselves and
defend and promote television technology. On the other hand
and in the long run , television may bring a gradual end to the
career of schoolteachers , since school was an invention of the
printing press and must stand or fall on the issue of how much
importance the printed word has”, so devices will take the major
place in some careers and will cut a labors, for example like a
teachers . Since a student will be able to stay at home and learn
all the information on the internet or other resources and do it
online. In addition, technologies confront each other in an
uncompromising aspect for the control of students’ minds, “ on
the one hand, there is the world of the printed word with its
emphasis on logic, sequence, history, exposition, objectivity,
detachment, and discipline. On the other, other is the world of
television with its emphasis on imagery, narrative presentness,
simultaneity, intimacy, immediate, gratification, and quick
emotional response.” by the article ” The Judgement of
Thamus”. Instead of it, people can say that students will be
more dependent on technology as morally and emotional
because they are growing in that sphere and will not see their
future without it.
Also, the speed with which modern technologies develop and
our attempts to catch up makes our life more stressful. We have
become more isolated, as more and more people replace real
relationships with social media ones. We virtually don’t need to
go out to satisfy our basic needs like foods, medicine and etc.
The most interesting thing is a modern person can’t live long
without the use of these technologies in our life, we became so
dependent on them, sometimes it’s scary to imagine how we
would manage, for example, without the Internet, a telephone or
a TV. These things have become an integral part of the life of
any person. And no one can say good or bad, everyone has his
own opinion on this matter. But looking at all this, I believe
that new generation is understanding that modern technology
used for the benefit and definite purpose for ourselves, and then
we can say that new technologies are always good for the
modern person.
What is your attitude towardnew technologies? Are you, as Neil
Postman puts it in “The Judgment of Thamus,” a “Technophile”
or “Technophobe”?
Using your own experience with a specific technology,
Postman’s text, and any other assigned text for the class thus
far, write an essay that develops a point of view in response to
the questions. In your essay, consider the “this-and-that” trade-
off—that is, the “burden” and the “blessing”—that comes with
the technology’s introduction into society and its use. Describe
in detail the technology’s form and functions and its effects, as
you understand them.
Do not do any outside research for this assignment. Stick to
what you know based on your first-hand experience and from
what you have read and watched for class thus far ONLY.

Aliaksandra Zuyonak English 12 Freshman Writing I Kevin Kolk.docx

  • 1. Aliaksandra Zuyonak English 12: Freshman Writing I Kevin Kolkmeyer November 3, 2019 Is it good or bad that we are so dependent on technology? People can hardly imagine their lives without modern technologies nowadays. We are used to the fact that all our phones and important contacts are recorded in phones, computers, laptops, and other portable gadgets. We fully rely on technology, we might be depending on it. Calculate how many computers, monitors, phones you have at home! A lot of? There are probably more phones than the number of people in your family, and everyone probably has a computer. These devices have become an important part of our life. Moreover, almost every day either a new technology is being invented or an old one is being improved. Different people appreciate new inventions differently. Some suppose that sophisticated gadgets are really useful and necessary, while others find them absolutely awful as they influence people badly and called it an addiction. As for me, I am pretty sure that gadgets make people's lives easier. Firstly, they do all kinds of dirty and hard work and save a lot of time. Secondly, people won't be to stop and will work more on new innovations, to helps people in different spheres. For instance, put computer programs into the phone or make robots likeness to people for getting extra help. According to the article ”Meet Zora, the Robot Caregiver” By ADAM SATARIANO, ELIAN PELTIER, and DMITRY KOSTYUKOV. It is one of the good examples of do not be scared and does not think that we may be addicted to technology. Zora is an experimental robot that helps change care for elderly patients. ” When Zora arrived at this nursing
  • 2. facility an hour outside Paris, a strange thing began happening: Many patients developed an emotional attachment, treating it like a baby, holding and cooing, giving it kisses on the head” from the article ”Meet Zora, the Robot Caregiver” By ADAM SATARIANO, ELIAN PELTIER, and DMITRY KOSTYUKOV. I would like to repeat the sentence ”Many patients developed an emotional attachment, treating it like a baby, holding and cooing, giving it kisses on the head” because it sounds very joyful and people may have a chance to be happy again and share their love to someone else such as Zora. All nursing can control the actions and communication of Zora from a laptop and it's useful to remind what is scheduled for patients and furthermore takes more care of individuals to all patients. However, patients have told the robot things about their health they wouldn’t share with doctors. It means patients trust more to robots than to people since people may hurt or offend hardly and the patient won't trust them. The robots have artificial intelligence and all action is under control, so why it's bad to be addicted to technology? Furthermore, everybody has a good chance to be happy and enjoy their lives. All new technologies, innovations, programs were made to make life easier. In the present day, a lot of people have a relationship with robots and feel very happy with them. According to the article ”Do you take this robot…” by Alex William ” This comes quickly on the heels of growing worldwide acceptance of gay, trans and bisexual people. Now you may describe yourself as polyamorous or demisexual — that last one is people who only feel sexual attraction in close emotional relationships. Perhaps you best identify as aromantic (that’s people who don’t feel romance) or sociosexual (that’s a primary attraction to people of no, or multiple, or complex genders).” All people may have the right to be free and can choose what they want to be or, with who they want to be. So why people may choose their gender, but not choosing their relationship? People want to be happy and not waiting for their single life to be what others want.
  • 3. Another area involves information technology is education. The schools began to start electronic diaries of students, with the help of which parents learn about their child's performance. In universities and other educational institutions, teachers are increasingly practicing throwing away lectures on electronic media, as well as practicing independent study of topics. Thus, the need to attend lectures is reduced. By submitting a term paper or diploma paper for verification, a student can simply drop his work to the teacher by e-mail, while reducing the time spent on a trip to the place of study and the time of the teacher: he can check the work at a convenient time and send it to the student with instructions for completion . In principle, the difference between full-time and part-time forms of education is reduced: in both cases, students study topics on their own. It is also worth noting the importance of distance learning. People with disabilities have a chance to get an education, to developmentally. Furthermore, students may have fun to study and share their thoughts in school by using social media such as Instagram, snap chat or tick-tock. According to the article "High Schools to TikTok: We’re Catching Feelings" by The New York Times“There’s a lot more than just funny videos,” Kaylani Heisler said. “I see countless ways to take notes, get organized. I see chemistry study aids. Students occasionally involve their teachers in TikTok stunts, and many educators have set up their accounts. Sarah Jacobs, a physics teacher at San Jose High School in California, said some of her students made TikToks explaining Newton’s Laws for extra credit last year." It makes the teacher closer to the students and moreover to understand students, their moods, their interest and be connected with them. In my opinion, how much we will be dependent on the computer - it may determine on us. Person himself should determine what to spend time on,how to live life. And if you use technology and other devices only for useful purposes and in moderation - life will become easier not only for us, but for
  • 4. future generations, and they will not have to suffer from our carelessness and laziness. Option 2:Identify a topic that came up in the class readings and use a question to bring attention to a way in which it is an issue. Develop your answer to the question in the body of the essay. Be clear about your point of view from the start; in other words, have a thesis statement that gives your answer to the question you pose. In the body of the essay, use counterargument strategy to deal with challenges to or concerns with your thesis and supporting ideas. In addition to using one or more of the articles assigned in class, you are required to use as a source ONE article that you find in the New York Times. Finally, attach a Works Cited page that lists the texts cited in the essay. Possible topics include but are not limited to technology and identity, technology and violence, technology and privacy, technology and ethics, technology and education, technology and the environment, technology and justice, technology and language, technology and race, technology and mental or physical health, technology and class, technology and freedom, or technology and the future. English 12: Freshman Writing I Should we stop using or developing technology in one day? Technology is a major part of human life to the point that people are hard to imagine their lives without machines. Every day either a new gadget is invented or an old one is improved. Different people appreciate new inventions differently. Some suppose that sophisticated gadgets are really useful and necessary, while others have a technophobe in them and find absolutely awful and dangerous for a human. As for me, I am more on the technophile side, which is pretty sure that technology is made for helping and for making easy life. Every morning when waking up, the first thing I do is I’m
  • 5. taking my phone and check social media, watch some movie I’m using my iPad, do my homework I’m using my computer, listen to news or music in the car, I'd turn on a radio. Therefore very hard to see life in 2019 without technology. While people are depending on technology and I would like to say, we are more on control of technology. The gadgets are the big word for most everyone who lives today, every day scientists are developing or improving technology for human life and trying to interact with people in exactly that way. Furthermore, the device’s achievement are doing all kinds of hard and dirty work of people, for saving time and make work easier. For example, a computer disk can contain the same amount of information as several thick books. Since a person will not even waste that much time to find exact information in the library or in other resources. It’s very interesting, that machines can help people in different spheres and not only in searching for information. According to the New York Times, by Brian X Chen “ Devices that will invade your life in 2019(and what's overhyped)”. , he said that c Try only imagine that we are opening our eyes in the new world, where it has the answers for difficult questions, such as a get to know a weather for all week or find a location and get direction on it, listen or watch what you want and it’s not will take a lot of time to find it, but people will have a one problem working with a device is you have to learn their language, as Frank Gillett, according to The New York Times, by Brian X. Chen said, “we still to learn their language, such as they have not learned our language”. It's true because as many answers the technology will have, it’s not a human and it cant have logical thought, or any feeling. Therefore is harder to understanding all steps for some people because devices are not at that time where they can learn our language and think like people. However, opponents of this point of view are definitely sure that gadgets affect people negatively. But it also depends on a person’s age, because most of them who have a technophobe is exactly that people who got a part of their life without
  • 6. interactions of the technology, and it’s making their knowledge and worldview in a different way. So they see in another way where is technological interaction brings only bad things for human life. People become lazy and disorganized. They just expect their latest gadgets to do everything instead of them. Furthermore, more and more people are becoming addicted to their modern gadgets, for instance, computers, TVs or mobile phones. While the people are making their rules, knows their close actions and future, where technology will d all of their work. According to the article ”The judgment of Thamus” , it says“it should surprise no one that such people, forming as they do a new knowledge monopoly, should cheer themselves and defend and promote television technology. On the other hand and in the long run , television may bring a gradual end to the career of schoolteachers , since school was an invention of the printing press and must stand or fall on the issue of how much importance the printed word has”, so devices will take the major place in some careers and will cut a labors, for example like a teachers . Since a student will be able to stay at home and learn all the information on the internet or other resources and do it online. In addition, technologies confront each other in an uncompromising aspect for the control of students’ minds, “ on the one hand, there is the world of the printed word with its emphasis on logic, sequence, history, exposition, objectivity, detachment, and discipline. On the other, other is the world of television with its emphasis on imagery, narrative presentness, simultaneity, intimacy, immediate, gratification, and quick emotional response.” by the article ” The Judgement of Thamus”. Instead of it, people can say that students will be more dependent on technology as morally and emotional because they are growing in that sphere and will not see their future without it. Also, the speed with which modern technologies develop and our attempts to catch up makes our life more stressful. We have become more isolated, as more and more people replace real relationships with social media ones. We virtually don’t need to
  • 7. go out to satisfy our basic needs like foods, medicine and etc. The most interesting thing is a modern person can’t live long without the use of these technologies in our life, we became so dependent on them, sometimes it’s scary to imagine how we would manage, for example, without the Internet, a telephone or a TV. These things have become an integral part of the life of any person. And no one can say good or bad, everyone has his own opinion on this matter. But looking at all this, I believe that new generation is understanding that modern technology used for the benefit and definite purpose for ourselves, and then we can say that new technologies are always good for the modern person. What is your attitude towardnew technologies? Are you, as Neil Postman puts it in “The Judgment of Thamus,” a “Technophile” or “Technophobe”? Using your own experience with a specific technology, Postman’s text, and any other assigned text for the class thus far, write an essay that develops a point of view in response to the questions. In your essay, consider the “this-and-that” trade- off—that is, the “burden” and the “blessing”—that comes with the technology’s introduction into society and its use. Describe in detail the technology’s form and functions and its effects, as you understand them. Do not do any outside research for this assignment. Stick to what you know based on your first-hand experience and from what you have read and watched for class thus far ONLY.
