This document outlines the agenda for the AWS User Group #03 meeting on All Things IoT. It includes two sessions on IoT topics - "IoT with Appdynamics" by Jody Nichols and "From On Prem to Cloud – Supply Chain IoT" by Sean Birrell of FluidIntel. FluidIntel develops an IoT solution called AdaptFMS for fuel and lubricant tracking in mining and rail industries. Birrell's session discusses challenges and opportunities of moving this solution from an on-premises to cloud-based deployment.

FluidIntel
• Not for much longer….Thanks Intel Corporation
• Developers of AdaptFMS Leading fuel and lubricant
tracking system in mining and rail
• Comprehensive inhouse R&D capacity
• Currently monitoring ~$4B in fuel and lubricant pa
• Expanding platform into other use cases and
commodities
• Macquarie Bank a leading commodities financer has
invested
12. 5
What is AdaptFMS?
• End to end supply chain monitoring and control for
commodities
• Full stack solution. FluidIntel undertake PCB design
and development, industrial design, firmware, web
application development, analytics and ML
• IoT solution includes sensors, gateways, field
interfaces and enterprise application

Challenges Moving to Cloud - Technical
• Windows environments and SQL Server DB’s
• Ruby On Rails Application
• Wide variation of SOE’s
• Field Devices rely on wireless comms outside of
cellular coverage
• Some field hardware on process control network
21. 14
Challenges Moving to Cloud – Non Technical
• Customers lagging on upgrades
• Critical application in deployed very remote areas
• Large conservative customers
• Some poor experiences with cloud
• Small team
22. 15
Opportunities & Benefits
• Standardized environment
• Better supported application server and DB
• Improve support for users and enterprise
• Improved security
• All of the above allows more focus on development
instead of Ops/Support
• Ease of integrating 3rd party services via API’s
23. 16
Pilot Solution
• Try and do it right the first time – first impressions
• VPN to overcome legacy device security issues
• Pick a ludicrously remote location in a different time zone
• Infrastructure as code
• CI/CD as a phase 2
27. 20
Infrastructure as Code
• Mitigate risks in high stakes deployment
• Set the expectation internally from the start about
how we manage our infrastructure
• Increase customer comfort with robustness of
approach
28. 21
Key Considerations
• Avoid single points of failure
• Keep spares on site
• Configure in house and prepare for DOA
• Challenges of extreme remoteness and different time
zones
• Robustness of point to point VPN tunnel
29. 22
Next Steps for FluidIntel
• Working on a CodeBuild/CodeDeploy pipeline to
automate deployments
• Eager to try Timestream
• If anyone in the audience is from AWS, please
come and talk to me!
• Plan to migrate to IoT Core
• AWS gives us more ability to split a monolithic web
application into multiple services
