(ask participants to hold cell phone in their hand)
Let’s pause for a moment
Blessing of our Cell Phones
Blessed are You, eternal God,
King of the universe:
You have called us in Jesus to be Your beloved people,
living pure and blameless lives in Your sight.
Bless + this cell phone.
Let your Spirit guide our words, texts, photos and videos
so that the light of Christ may shine before all
and lead all who receive them to give You praise.
May our words, texts, photos and videos be filled with the spirit of love,
with the obedience of faith,
and the strength of hope.
Make our lives be joyful in Your service,
and bring those we connect with closer to You.
Father all-holy,
we praise Your Name,
and ask this blessing through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
This prayer is adapted from the Family Blessing at - http://www.catholicdoors.com/prayers/english/p01096.htm
Please put your phone on silence to vibrate so they wont bother you tonight.
Remember that this is our blended learning model, including our face to face time, blog and wiki.
Please feel free – during the week to:
Contact your instructors if you need assistance.
Locate a high school or college age student to mentor you
Contact a classmate who may be more skilled in an area to assist you with the assignment
Our goal is to become a community of learners who will support one another and to be there for one another. We are the new disciples, learning how to fish in new waters!
Mobile devices encompass several different types of devices such as the cell phone, smart phone, iPod, iPad and various e-readers. Through a wireless connection this combination of devices become what is known as a Bring Your Own Device environment. This would be an entire module unto it self. But of this devices the most prevalent is the cell phone.
For the purpose of this webinar we will focus on the cell phone and the wonderful and innovative ways we can use them to enhance learning and general experience of an event. There are many different types of phones on the market, however even the most basic phone today comes equipped with a camera and the ability to text. Of course this varies by the plan that is attached to that device.
The resource for the presentation tonight is Toys to Tools: Connecting Student Cell Phones to Education. To purchase a copy you can click on the link or search for it on the internet. Even if you work with adults it really has wonderful and adaptive ideas that can be used at any age.
You can go to the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project to read more. Here are some highlites.
Project Tomorrow- study results complied through the National Center for Educational Statistics. They started in 2010 and published findings in Feb of 2011.
Through the 3 new trends in teaching- Mobile Learning, Online and Blended Learning (DDBC is a perfect example of this) and E-Textbooks melt together creating the 3 E’s of learning for today’s students…Enabling them to learn at any time, Engaging them in learning and seeking information and Empowering them to create a new generation of Life Long Learners!
Added to this is the ability to check grades and access information for projects or homework
So what does this chart tell you about how teens and young adults communicate. In one job I had at if you didn’t text you didn’t work. This were people in their early 20’s. The same group that we are missing often in church.
Now let’s look at the number so texts adult vs. teen. The average number of texts per month for at teen/ early 20’s is 3339!
After I saw this numbers I found that I communicated much better with my own kids by text. It’s amazing what happens when we learn to speak their digital language.
We are now dealing with a generation that is completely ok with sharing just about everything…the good and the bad. They click on the answers. They communicate in completely new way…how do you choose to minister to them? And we need to know how to get and keep the lines of communication open
Through the use of technology there is an increase in achievement environments that do not use technology. Now think about the tools available to you in your teaching or ministry environment.
So let’s keep all these words in mind when we think about the areas we work in. We have …
It is going on everywhere else and we need to get moving. No it wont be needed at all times. But as in our blessing we can see that there is both good and bad. It’s all how you use it.
This resource will help you outline Digital Etiquette as well as help address some of the concerns that will arise.
They have a good section on Podcasting, which as you can guess can be as high tech as can be, but with the use of a cell phone can quite simple and effective. You can look and say well all this is fine for a school setting our your classroom, but I teach religious ed. Well those children live in a tech driven world and when we say or plan that way, we are telling the students in a way that the tech world they live in can’t be blended. this is what they know and how they learn. Don’t we run the risk of teaching them that our Catholic Faith is obsolete.
Let’s create an environment of “mashups”. Taking the best of both and creating a new and vibrant experience. So if there is a project for History-how can adapt that and make it apply to my area.
We use this at Queen of Peace
Acceptable Use Policy-mostly for learning environment. But never tragic to go over with adults. Simply the AUP is how, when and why explanation of the technologies you will be using
If you are in a parish that has a school – ask them for a copy of their Acceptable Use Policy This is a sample of an AUP as searched on the internet.
Re assure parents…
How about learning co operation through sharing a device.
Can the parish invest in a few iPads, and rotate the students through. Other Ideas?
Voice thread, podcasting through Yodio
Went to DC and thought about how multicultural our country is… and how many kids have never seen a portrait of Mary other than Italian Ren. Style Mary brings us closer to Jesus and so I took some photos of various places in the Basilica.
Helping them explore their faith in a new way
Here are some of the photos I took. Various things
So here it is…and one of the nice things is after the students watch the video they can comment on it. You can sent it to them at home. Or it can be an activity they can do at home.
Great for YouTube videos. We have done a wonderful YouTube Teen Stations of the Cross this way in our Middle School Youth Group.
It does NOT WORK to show an app- like Ignio- share a Bible verse. That you need apple TV for. This is without internet access-you would be using your iPhone safari. Super easy. Test out the space you will be using this in first. If your phone calls get dropped in that space…you will get a lot of buffering, when the video starts and stops a lot. So just do a test run first.
With permission- the interview will probable get posted somewhere on the internet. Maybe on the parish website.
Gabcast is not available, but in our class blog there is a search for 60 tools like it! So no worries there! Sites come and go a lot…so just look
With a cell phone you can post photos immediately to a blog Pg 72 has the steps to do that.
This is great with a little older students. With you being the editor or moderator of the blog you can remove any posts that are inappropriate.
You can give them the freedom to work on the project, but at the same time are able to teach them about responsibility.
Maybe at a church event…like our Oktoberfest. The students can have fun and the event will taking photos and uploading them to Photobucket. You can even have videos . In most public events permissions isn’t needed for photos because it’s in a public space, but always check with your parish. Our parish we always check for kids in photos that we know have signed our diocesan waiver with a “no” for photos in FF or Youth Group.
For our Advent prayer service and adoration hour with reconciliation, we have add spread through the church qr codes that will bring up a video, reading or poster that will help our teens focus.
What is in the student’s hand…clicker or responder. This can be expensive. $1900 a classrooom
NOTES:
There is a service called Poll Everywhere.
So lets do this
* You must be using PowerPoint on Windows to show polls embedded in PowerPoint. Please use the Mac Deskbar or display your polls from PollEverywhere.com if you are on a Mac.
This slide is just for your own notes, as a presenter or instructor. You may print these, memorize them, or actually put them into the Notes portion of a slide in your own presentation.
This slide is for display to the audience to show them how they will vote on your polls in your presentation. You can remove this slide if you like or if the audience is already comfortable with texting and/or voting with Poll Everywhere.
Sample Oral Instructions:
Ladies and gentlemen, throughout today’s meeting we’re going to engage in some audience polling to find out what you’re thinking, what you’re up to and what you know. Now I’m going to ask for your opinion. We’re going to use your phones to do some audience voting just like on American Idol.
So please take out your cell phones, but remember to leave them on silent. You can participate by sending a text message.
This is a just standard rate text message, so it may be free for you, or up to twenty cents on some carriers if you do not have a text messaging plan. The service we are using is serious about privacy. I cannot see your phone numbers, and you’ll never receive follow-up text messages outside this presentation. There’s only one thing worse than email spam – and that’s text message spam because you have to pay to receive it!

So please take out your cell phones or laptops, but remember to leave them on silent. The way you will be able to participate is by tweeting a response to @poll. Your followers won’t be bothered by this message.
Press F5 or enter presentation mode to view the poll
In an emergency during your presentation, if the poll isn't showing, navigate to this link in your web browser:

If you like, you can use this slide as a template for your own voting slides. You might use a slide like this if you feel your audience would benefit from the picture showing a text message on a phone.
If you use your device the way it is with the built in mic it sounds one way…if you use an external mic the sound quality changes dramatically
I know…you might be saying I’m not at a school- but it’s still valid for a Faith Formation / ministry environment
I will send it to you after the webinar If you read it you will see how it can work for your parish as well
Do you have to KNOW all this…no…but knowing what questions to ask is very helpful…this is that BYOD we mentioned earlier this evening.
As more and more students have a mobile device and are willing to use it in your faith setting, we need to be able to encourage this. I have been bringing my own wireless setup to youth group this year..and now we are going to WiFi BYOD It is wonderful. Will be ready for the opening of school in Aug and our FF and Youth Groups in Sept. especailly useful in encourage the use of iPads iPods and e-readers and tablets.
There have been inter college campuses brought to their knees, do to the large numbers of iPads brought to campus in the fall. Really happened a couple years ago. So there is a lot to be said about being prepared and asking the right questions.
Allow participants to ask questions or offer feedback.
After lab assignment
This recorded webinar will be posted on SlideShare.com.
As soon as it is posted, we will provide a link on our wiki home page.
THANK YOU!
