WeChat: Key Observations
Derek Edmond • Managing Partner • @DerekEdmond
@KoMarketing Search • Social • Content
WeChat began as an instant messaging app before morphing into a
fully-fledged, integrated social networking platform.
• +549 Million Users / #1 Social Platform in China
• Users can communicate via instant messaging, written text,
video/audio calls, sound recordings or video clips.
• Two Types of “Official Accounts”
– Service Accounts: provides services to enable your users to buy
goods online, or even integrated ecommerce. Messages can only be
sent once a week.
– Subscription Accounts: provides information such as coupons,
promotions, news, and relevant contents. Communicate followers
much more frequently – once a day.
• QR codes are a easy way for people to find you and follow the
official account. Publish QR codes on websites, social media
profiles, company newsletters, packaging or event locations.

the recipients to one another.
– WhatsApp places limitations on the setup of Broadcast Lists: each list
is typically no more than 250 contacts
• Average amount of time spent by users on WhatsApp at a weekly
basis is 195 minutes, checking the app approximately 23 times
per day.
• WhatsApp is responsible for 27% of selfies shared on social
media.

  1. Start with agenda Regional overviews Top platforms – general and country-specific snapshots Highlighted concepts related to popular platforms
  2. Social Media Use – Global Average = 29% Mobile Connections – Global Average = 98% Mobile / Social Connections (On Social via Mobile) –Global Average = 23%
  3. 561 million users in East Asia alone
  4. Google+ (300M – down 10% since beginning of year) Take note of the fact that all of the top platforms have a significant mobile emphasis; two of which are specifically messaging platforms. It’s also worth nothing that with the acquisition of WhatsApp this past year, Facebook’s combined reach is nearly 3 billion and continuing to grow. And finally, even though Google has lost market share in its specific (and quite possibly soon to be retired) social channel, Google+, keep in mind that more than 1 billion users are on YouTube (arguably a social platform in itself) and there are more than 900 million Gmail users (where a vast majority of information collection by Google could be realized).
  5. LinkedIn 12%
  6. Users can share information in their “Friends Circle” – like posting to a timeline (of friends); NOTE: contacts not connected CANNOT see unconnected communications NOTE – this posts to all contacts associated to WeChat (you can block posts) Service Accounts: companies essentially have “microsites” for various business offerings and objectives Subscription Accounts: more like blog / Twitter
