Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24) Immediately suggests a moment’s decision. A father has been given the task of providing for his household. We are told in scripture, “But IF anyone (literally “any man”) does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever” (1 Timothy 5:8). This father responds straight away because he has been unable to provide for his son the blessing of health for his entire childhood (v.21). Jesus told him what he needed to “fix” his son! Any father or mother worth their salt will jump at the chance to fix, to heal, to soothe! The instantaneous nature to the response is because the remedy has been told. “Jesus said to him, ‘If…” (Mark 9:23). This tiny word “If” is felt by every parent. “If” taunts our past “If only I hadn’t.” If taunts our future, “If only I could.” This father, who has met dead end after dead end in helping his son, has finally found the one who can heal his boy! Yet, as you will see, he almost found a dead-end with Jesus. While Peter, James, and John went away with the Messiah to a mountain, they had a deeply spiritual and affirming experience. They heard the words of God, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him” (Mark 9:7). Yet, upon coming down the mountain to the other apostles, “If” reared its ugly head in a faithless situation. Jesus found them arguing with the Scribes, so He asked what was going on. “Then one of the crowd answered and said, ‘Teacher, I brought YOU my son, who has a mute spirit. And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast it out, but they could not.’ He answered him and said, ‘O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me’” (Mark 9:17-19) This Father could have been just like the woman with the 12-year issue of blood from a few weeks earlier. She utilized the word IF in a powerful and Faithful way. “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well” (Mark 5:28). This father brought his son to Jesus and faithlessness almost set in. His Apostles couldn’t heal the boy! Could Jesus? This is why he used the word “If” when speaking to Jesus: “But IF You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us” (Mark 9:22b) Now Jesus’ response makes sense: ‘If… you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes’” (Mark 9:23). With all the dead ends that this father had met, all those “ifs” that had not come to fruition, he jumped at the chance for one to finally be realized with his son! Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24) His son was healed! May we have the same faith that understands Jesus can help us with our “Ifs.” A Note From the Harp P.S. IF you have any questions remember our Q&A is tonight. Please place them in our Q&A box in the foyer for every 5th Sunday Night.
