The Secrets of God
Human comprehension is limited. We can barely remember what we were
doing a week ago, let alone grasp the many areas of study and learning that are
available. And that doesn’t even cover the vast amount of knowledge that humanity
is entirely unaware of. As Sir Isaac Newton once said, “What we know is a drop,
what we don’t know is an ocean.” This quote aptly displays the limitation of human
knowledge from one of the most knowledgeable men of all time.
So it makes sense why mankind has struggled at times to understand the
spiritual things of God. As God Himself said, “…So are My ways higher than your
ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts” (Is. 55:9b). Scripture testifies, “The
secret things belong to the Lord our God…” (Deut. 29:29a). Given the infinite
nature of God it shouldn’t be surprising that His thinking exceeds ours and that He
knows secret things that we don’t. While all these things are true, it can still lead to
the mistaken thinking about what can be known about God and spiritual things.
Have you ever heard the phrase, “The Lord works in mysterious ways”?
Ironically, this quote is not from the Bible. It can certainly be true that God works
in ways that are sometimes mysterious to us, but this doesn’t mean that the nature
of God or His workings are incomprehensible to us. As we can see in the next
portion of Deut. 29:29, there is more to the story than God possessing secret
knowledge what we don’t have. As it says, “…but the things revealed belong to
us.” God has revealed many spiritual truths to us through His Word. It is chock full
of things about the nature of God, His workings, why He did what He did and does
what He does. The Bible is packed with answers that God has given to us.
When we carefully examine Scripture, we see many examples of how God
has often revealed secret things to His people over the course of time. Psalms 25:14
declares, “The secret of the LORD is for those who fear Him, and He will make
them know His covenant.” Daniel said of God, “It is He who reveals the profound
and hidden things…” (Dan. 2:22). We can also see that Jesus spoke in parables to
reveal “things hidden since the foundation of the world” (Mat. 13:35). And the
mystery that the Gentiles would become equal partakers with Jews under the New
Covenant with Jesus Christ was revealed to humanity through the Gospel (Rom.
16:25-26).
God is a God who give us answers, reveals His purpose, and shows us His
workings. While it is true that there are many things that only God knows, that
should never lead us to overlook the many things and answers that God has
revealed to us in His Word. So never be afraid to dig into Scripture and search for
answers. Some things we won’t know ‘til we see God, but let us treasure and learn
the secrets that God has given us in the meantime!
