The More Excellent Way
This week is always a special one because it is
devoted to love for others. The tradition of Valentine’s
day applies to the most excellent way described in the Scriptures: love.
In the Church’s infancy, it depended on spiritual gifts for its growth and nourish-
ment. These gifts were varied, yet vital for growth, and caused all to stand in awe of their
Father. While writing to the Corinthians, Paul saw that something was missing.
“Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed
in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of
healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all
prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all
speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will
show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but
have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers,
and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove
mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up
my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is…” (1 Corinthians 12:27-
13:4a).
Why is love defined as the “most” excellent way?
Notice that the gifts of the Holy Spirit were varied, and people desired certain gifts
assigned by God that limited some. Not everyone received the gift of speaking in different
languages. Not everyone received the gift of prophecy. Paul tells the Corinthians to desire
a gift that was more excellent. This word literally means “extraordinary quality.” A gift
that far outweighed all other gifts. A gift desired by all, and achievable by all!
Love is something we can all do. It is an achievable feat for every single person -- not one
person is excluded from the love feast. There is no one person who can love better than
anyone else. It levels the playing field!
Do you desire the more excellent way?
