God Hasn’t Given Up on People, Neither Should You
Do you ever feel like we live in extremely immoral times? It is far from an uncommon
feeling. We often discuss how immorality and corruption is everywhere in our society,
and continues to increase. And although this conclusion is self-evident, this
observation sometimes leads to exaggeration. How often have you heard fellow
Christians characterize our country as the most immoral society in history, or say that
Jesus is going to come back any day now because of how immoral the world is? This
sentiment is common, but is it true?
In Genesis chapter 6, we find a clear answer. Before the Great Flood, God here in
Genesis said that “every intent” of mankind’s “heart was only evil continually” (Gen.
6:5). Mankind has never been more immoral than in this moment in history. This is
why God flooded the earth (Gen. 6:6, 11-13). And though our society is degrading
morally, we can see clearly that the world has been much more immoral in the past.
So, what happens to us if we believe the lie that the world is more immoral than it ever
has been? The effect is discouragement from evangelism, and inactivity. We may say,
“Why fight the inevitable corruption of the world? What can I do about it?”
But when we look to the truth of God’s Word, we find a message of hope for a corrupt
world, not a message of fatalism: God has not given up people, and there are more
people that can be saved and will be saved. How do we know this to be true? The
answer is in 2 Pet. 3:7-9. We see here that God is ready and waiting to destroy the
world with a flood of fire (2 Pet. 3:7), but restrains this judgment from the world, be-
cause He “is patient…not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repen-
tance” (2 Pet. 3:9). 2 Peter 3:9 demonstrates that God hasn’t given up on people. He
continues to patiently give humanity more time because He wants more people to come
to repentance (2 Pet. 3:9). This means that God still believes that people can change,
that more people can be saved.
Like God, we also must never give up on people as long as God allows humanity more
time on earth to be saved (2 Pet. 3:9). Remember, God didn’t give up on us! He
allowed us enough time to become saved. And praise be to God that He did! Yes, there
is a flood of fire coming which will put an end to this world (2 Pet. 3:7, 10), but it is
not here yet. There is still time for more to be saved. And if Noah preached (2 Pet. 2:5)
to an irredeemably immoral world, how much more so should we continue to preach to
a world in which there is still hope, and still people being saved? Let us have faith in
the God who has hope for humanity. Let us have the same attitude as God towards
people. Because God hasn’t given up on people, and neither should you.
