Mother is
A gift that keeps on giving
For she is why you are living
She is why you are here in this world
She selflessly gave life to her boy or girl.
Mother is and was, your beginning, your start
You will always have a place in her heart
Because you began your journey next to its beat
Your heart kept in time to its rhythm so sweet
As your fingers took on form, and your toes took shape
Her feet and hands were moving preparing for that date.
As you came into this world and took your first breath
She had already given everything almost to death
Her sacrifice is often unmentioned, unnoticed
For independently of her we live, we exist
We make our own lives and plans in time
Yet mother is. She is and was my reason and rhyme.
So remember her and if you are blessed with this gift
Thank God up above that your
Mother is.

A World Turned Upside Down
When Paul and Silas came to the city of Thes-
salonica they went to the synagogue where they
reasoned with those Jews from the Scriptures,
âexplaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to
suffer and rise again from the deadâ (Acts 17:3a).
However there were those who opposed Paul cry-
ing out against them saying, âThese who have
turned the world upside down have come here
tooâ (Acts 17:6b). In the example of these Chris-
tians we learn that they shook the Roman Empire to
its very foundation.
While the church today has met with some
success it obviously is not the same as the church
of the first century. The church in some areas has
grown but in other places it has lost membership.
Overall worldwide membership is down in our world
today we find that the âman on the streetâ is of the
opinion that âone religion is just as good as an-
other.â Some college professors would argue that
âone religion is as false as another.â Politicians of-
ten use religion as a tool to meet their political
needs. They may view religion as valuable only as it
helps to promote their aspiration to be elevated to
some political office. Thus, despite a certain amount
of âlip service,â most people are indifferent to relig-
ion. Why is it that the church of the first century had
such a profound influence on the world of its day?
The following reasons for this are taken from a les-
son delivered by the late Thomas B. Warren.
First, the church of the first century ârefused to
accept the view that Christ was just another âgodâ
among many Gods.â In the first century there
seemed to be more âgodsâ than people. In the city
of Athens it was joked that it was easier to find a
âgodâ than a man. It has been said that Athens con-
tained more than 10,000 idols. Luke spoke of this
when he wrote in Acts 17:16, âNow while Paul
waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked
within him when he saw that the city was given over
to idols,â (the ASV says âfull of idolsâ). Then again in
verse 22 Paul addressed the people at the Are-
opagus saying, âMen of Athens, I perceive that in all
things you are very religious.â
In Rome it was the same but more so. It is
said that Rome had 30,000 idols. So in both the
Greek and Roman culture there was a literal pan-
theon. But the early church insisted that Jesus was
THE Son of God! Jesus Himself declared to the
people, âTherefore I said to you that you will die in
your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you
will die in your sinsâ (Jn. 8:24).
