Why The Personal Evangelism Seminar? Part 2
Last week we began our discussion on why we are having
a personal evangelism seminar. The answer being, we are
plainly told to go into all the world. The problem is, we
are often not told how. On June 11-13, I want to encour-
age you to attend our Personal Evangelism Seminar with
Rob Whitacre. This is for the whole congregation. Today
we are going to discuss our second reason regarding “Why the Personal Evangelism Seminar?”
2) Evangelism can be uncomfortable.
Comfort is something we all want. God wanted us to have comfort, or else He would not have sent
the Holy Spirit to us under the name Comforter. So, being uncomfortable is unnatural. It might be
safe to say that it is something few people enjoy. How can we make evangelism comfortable?
I remember being very uncomfortable conducting a funeral when we lived in Ohio. While meeting
with the family of the deceased, a sister in-law handed me a handwritten piece of paper. I was
given the directions by her that on this piece of paper was “every word I was to say at the funeral.”
I told her, “If you want this funeral to be real, I will need to write what I say myself.” Put-
ting something into our own words means we will be comfortable with the topic. If the words are
not our own, sharing the Gospel will be very uncomfortable. The words of God we share with oth-
ers need to first be internalized, so we know how to tell others the Good News confidently and
comfortably.
Remember also that it is not your words that do the convicting, encouraging, and converting.
“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away,
the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will
convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do
not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no
longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged (John 16:7–11).
“And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with
lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him
crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my
message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,
so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God”
(1 Corinthians 2:1-5).

Ready To Give An Answer:
But I Have Questions.
“Now who is there to harm you if you are
zealous for what is good? But even if you
should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you
will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be
troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the
Lord as holy, always being prepared to make
a defense to anyone who asks you for a rea-
son for the hope that is in you; yet do it with
gentleness and respect, having a good con-
science, so that, when you are slandered,
those who revile your good behavior in
Christ may be put be put to shame”
(1 Peter 3:13-17).
