Forgive Yourself?
The mistakes of the past can haunt us. Lingering guilt can
cripple our future. What’s the solution? Ask many people
today, and they will often tout the virtue of forgiving your-
self. Although this is a prominent idea today, it is far from
new. William Shakespeare once penned, “Do as the heavens
have done, forget your evil; With them forgive yourself.” C.
JoyBell C., one of the most influential inspirational female
writers of today’s world expressed in similar words, “I have
learned, that the person I have to ask for forgiveness from
the most is: myself.” Many today will even espouse that
self-forgiveness is a Christian virtue. So, what is the truth
about self-forgiveness? Is it virtuous and essential?
God’s Word reveals an important truth: there is no command
or mention of self-forgiveness. All have sinned (Rom. 3:23),
and the wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23). Only through
God’s gift of Jesus can forgiveness be obtained (Rom. 6:23;
1 John 2:1-2). This makes perfect sense. If you need forgive-
ness, that means your indebted to someone – whether you
owe something or have committed a wrong against someone.
Only the one you’re indebted to can forgive you. If you are
indebted to the IRS, you cannot forgive yourself of what you
owe them. Give it a try, and you’ll find out otherwise! All
who sin are slaves to sin (John 8:34). Only Jesus can free
people from sins (John 8:36). The whole point why Jesus
gave His life for the forgiveness of our sins is because we
were incapable of doing it ourselves. We are helpless to pay
for sin without Christ (Rom. 5:6). All sin is against God
(Rom. 3:23), so only God can forgive through Jesus. It is His
forgiveness, not our own that we need.
The problem is that sometimes people hold on to guilt and
sorrow over past sins, even if they have come into Christ
and have received His forgiveness (Eph. 1:7). This is often
why people feel like they need to forgive themselves. The
problem is not a need for self-forgiveness, the problem is not
recognizing in full faith that the one who Jesus forgives is
forgiven indeed (John 8:36). Imagine if you had a large debt
to the IRS. Now imagine that they sent you a notice in the
mail that your debt has been entirely forgiven. You would be
ecstatic! But now imagine that weeks and months later you
felt guilt over the debt you previously owed, and still didn’t
feel forgiven. “Maybe I need to forgive myself,” you think.
Would you do this? Of course not! The IRS telling you that
your debt was forgiven was all that you needed to feel free
and to know that you are forgiven. So, this also is the key to
freedom in Christ: knowing that you are truly free from sin
and guilt. John wrote the letter of 1 John in part to remind
the Christians that their sins had been forgiven, that they
were free (1 John 2:12). This is what is missing for many
Christians: having this full confidence and assurance. So
let us forget the sin behind, and look forward to the bright
future before us. Because when we walk in the light, we are
forgiven and free from guilt. And God’s forgiveness through
Jesus is the only forgiveness that we need.
